Claudius Tullos

Note*   Cloud Tulos was granted a patent to land in 1665 for transporting two persons to the colonies. The land was described as being on the Chicacone River in Northumberland County.

Cloud Tulley is mentioned in Northumberland County records. date Aug 4, 1665 as having been 24 years old at that time, indicating he was born about 1641

Claudius Tullos was born about 1641 and died in 1700 as per the date on the Administration of the Estate of Cloud Tullos, 19 July 1700.

His wife's name was Sarah but a marriage record has not been found that mentions her maiden name. Their first son, Cloud, was freed from tax in 1683 "being found deaf and dumb." He was probably 21 at that time which would make his birth about 1662 and the marriage of Claudius and Sarah about 1660. The other children of this marriage were Richard b. 1667 d. 1734; Susanna, b. 1672, who married John Hughlett and second Joseph Franklin; Sarah, dates unknown but married James Fulk; and John b. June 12, 1682 d. 1737.

Claudius appeared frequently in court and civil records in Northumberland County. In 1678 he was part of a court suit, he owned land with John Donadlson between 1680 and 1687. He was named constable of Chicacone June 1683. In 1691 and 1698 he appears on estate records. Je was named with others to clear a road called Ridge Path on Cherry Point in 1696. An orphan, Walter Grady, chose Claudius as his guardian in 1698.

Will*   "At court held in Northumberland County, 19 July 1700, Sarah Tullos made motion to probate the last will of Cloud Tullos, deceased. The will was proved by the oaths of Vincent Garner and John Walter. The will of Sarah Tullos, deceased, was admitted to probate before a court held in Northumberland County, Virginia on 12 March 1713/14. The will was proved by the oaths of John Conway, Susana Conway and George Dawkins.(Dawson?)"

The patent was granted for the transportation of two persons, Dorcus Hinton and John Rosse (Roffe), and the land was described as being on the Chicacone River in Northumberland County and bounded by the lands of Robert Lick, Captain Rogers, Mathew Rodham, M.Flint and John Kent.2
