Will Probated 15 NOV 1762 in Dale Parish Chesterfield County, VA (Adventurers of Purse and Person).


"Son of Henry and Mary (Mitchell) Clay. (Cumberland Co. VA Court Order Book 1758-1762, p.498) His great grandfather, John Clay, came to Jamestown in 1613 in a company of musketeers. His father Henry Clay (1672-1760) traded with the Indians in the deep wilderness, bringing back in 1712, some Indian slaves.

Cut from the forests along Swift Creek, Henry's farms were close to Edward Watkins' land.


SOURCE: Adventurers of Purse and Person 1607-1625, 3rd ed. 1987 revised and edited by Virginia M. Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, p. 192-6 says John was the brother of Amey Clay (3920), their parents were Henry Clay born 1672 VA and Mary Mitchell born Jan 1692/3 probably VA. His grandson was Sen Henry Clay.
