In 1850, he may have been living in ward 3, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If so, he was living with his (presumed) parents Robert and Bathena Beal, and (presumed) sister Helen. [source: 10]

In 1860, he was living in ward 13, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) parents Robert and Parthenia Beal, his (presumed) sister Helen, and William Price. He had attended school within the year. [source: 11]

He was a photogra[pher] when he enlisted. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 4 February 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Shipley. He was mustered in as a private in company H, by Lieutenant Boorke. [source: 1, 2, 3, 6, 20, 21]

He was absent, in hospital, when the regiment mustered out. He was discharged on 7 August 1865. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 6 (5 Aug), 20, 21]

According to the pension index card, he also served in company C of the 3rd Veterans' Reserve Corps. [source: 6]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) mother Parthenia and (presumed) sister Helen. He was a photographer. [source: 12]

In 1880, he was living at 117 Washington Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had a boarder, John H Gould. He was a photographer. [source: 13]

In 1888, he married Clara M Duling, probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born in November 1852, in Pennsylvania. They had one known child:

In 1910, he was living at 2507 Master Street, ward 29, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Clara and daughter Helen. He was a salesman, for a metal company. [source: 14]

His pension was increased to $14.50 per month, effective 21 May 1912, under the Act of 11 May 1912. The certificate was dated 5 February 1913. [source: 19]

His pension was increased to $16.50 effective 26 April 1913; the certificate was dated 28 June 1913. Apparently it was scheduled to increase to $21.50 on 26 April 1917, and to $27 on 26 April 1922. [source: 19]

He died on 4 March 1916, at 2507 Master Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of carcinoma of the sublingual gland, with physical exhaustion contributing. The funeral was held from his late residence, 2507 Master Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 8 March 1916, he was buried at the Chester Rural Cemetery. [sources: 6, 7, 8, 18, 19]

On 11 March 1916, his widow Clara M Beale applied successfully for a pension from Pennsylvania, under the Act of 19 April 1908. She received $12 per month, retroactive to 11 March 1916; the certificate was dated 22 April 1916. [sources: 6, 9, 19]

On 22 April 1916, the pension office issued an "accrued order" for payment of the pension due her husband. [source: 19]

Clara's pension was increased to $25 per month effective 6 October 1917. [source: 19]

In 1920, his widow, Clara M Beale, was living at 2507 Master Street, ward 29, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her daughter Helen. [source: 15]
