Frederick Berger

Before the war

He was born in 1824/25, in Germany [sources: date: 2 (40 in 1865), 6 (1825), 7 (24 in 1850), 8 (35 in 1860), 9 (45 in 1870). place: 6, 7, 8, 9]

In 1850, he was living in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was a laborer. He was living with Catharine Burger. (Given her age, Catharine might be his mother. However, the Catharine Coy who was living with him from 1860 through 1880, and who may have been married to Frederick Coy, was his sister (though the Catharine living with him and with Frederick Coy in 1870 was born in Maryland, not in Pennsylvania.) Could this be she, and '56' a mistake for '26'?) [source: 7]

On 30 July 1857, he married Elizabeth Coy. She was born in 1824/25, in Maryland, to Christian and Mary Coy. They were married by the minister of the Saint Paul Methodist Church, Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. They had one known child:

In 1860, he was living in Green Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Elizabeth, their son John, and with Catharine Coy. He was a mason, and owned $200 [?] in personal property. [source: 8]

During the war

He was a substitute. He was mustered into service on 24 March 1865. He was mustered in as a private, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He served as a private in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 5, 12]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 5, 12]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was a mason, and owned $1,300 in real estate and $500 in personal property. He was living with his wife Elisabeth, their son John, and with Catharine and Frederick Coy. [source: 9]

In 1880, he was living in Fayetteville, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Elizabeth, his sister Cathrin, and his nephew [sic] John. He was a farmer. [source: 10]

He died on 18 December 1887. He was buried in the United Brethren Cemetery, in Scotland, Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 4, 5]

On 27 [or 28] July 1890, his widow, Elizabeth Berger, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 3, 4]
