He was born in 1841/42 (3 (19 in 1861)).
He enlisted and was mustered into service in company G of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on 17 September 1861, commanded by Captain A J Sellers (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for three years, by Captain Smith (?), at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). But he was mistakenly entered on the list for company G of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, commanded by Captain E G Sellers (2, 3, 4).
He was transferred to company G of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 2, 4).
