He was born in 1833/34 (3 (27 [?] in 1861).
He enlisted and was mustered into service in company G of the 90th Pennsylvania, commanded by Captain A J Sellers, on 17 September 1861 (1, 2, 3). He was enrolled for three years at Philadelphia, by Lieutenant Peirce (3). By mistake, he was added to the list for company G of the 91st Pennsylvania, commanded by Captain E G Sellers (2, 3, 4).
He was transferred to company G of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 2, 4). He was then a corporal (1, 2, 4).
