James Manniess or Manices

Before the war

He was born in 1800/17, in Fermana, Ireland. [source: date: 2 (44 in 1861), 10 (68 in 1869). place: 2, 10]

When he enlisted, he was a gardener. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and grey hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service in company K on 14 October 1861. (According to the company E descriptive roll, he was enlisted and mustered into service by Captain Lentz, which doesn't match Bates--perhaps this is a mistaken reconstruction of his enlistment.) He was a private in company K. [sources: 1 (mustered in in 1864, but mustered out 1862), 2, 5-7]

He was transferred on 24 December 1861 to company E. [sources: 1, 4]

He was discharged on 10 June 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at Washington, DC. He was a private, in company E. [sources: 1, 3, 5-7]

After the war

On 25 March 1869, he (apparently) died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of pneumonia. He died at, or was buried from, Washington Avenue above 7th Street, ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 28 March 1869, he was buried, from his son's house, at Sidmouth Street, below Washington Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in Mutual Ground, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 9, 10]

[transcribed 3 January 2015, from FamilySearch]
[note that the FamilySearch indexer read the date as 20 March 1867, and the family name as Mannies; I have relied in part on the death notice, but I'm confident about the date, and reasonably confident about the family name]
[identification is speculative; the name is distinctive, but he's older than the regimental records suggest]
