Before the war

He was born in 1845/46, in Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, perhaps to George and Margaret Wood, or to John Wood. [sources: date: 3 (20 in 1864), 10 (4 in 1850), 11 (13 in 1860). place: 3, 9, 10, 11. parents: 10 (living with Geo and Margaret in 1850), 11 (living with John)]

In 1850, he was living in Marcus Hook Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was living with George and Margaret Wood (perhaps his parents), and with Ellen Marretta, Benjamin, and Penrose Wood (perhaps siblings). [source: 10]

In 1860, he was living in Lower Chichester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was living with John Wood, and with Mary, Margetta, Benjamin, Penrose, and William Wood (perhaps siblings). [source: 11]

When he enlisted, he was a waterman. [source: 3]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private at Philadelphia Pennsylvania for three years as a recruit [i.e. a volunteer?] in company E on 22 January 1864. He was enlisted by Lieutenant Shipley and mustered into service by Lieutenant Hilderburn. [sources: 1, 3, 15]

On 24 February 1864, he married Sarah Ann Malcom. She was born in 1845/46, in Pennsylvania. They were both from Linwood, Pennsylvania. They were married by Reverend Alexander W Sproull, of Chester, Pennsylvania. They had no children. [source: 9]

He was killed on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, while charging the enemy's works, by being shot through the throat. He was a private in company E. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 15]

After the war

His widow, Sarah A Wood, successfully applied for a pension, application 75,797 on 14 December 1864, under the act of 14 July 1862. She was 19 years old, and living in Linwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Her application was accepted on 1 March 1865, retroactive to 27 October 1864. She received $8 per month. On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning his death (and fifteen others), and sympathizing with their families. [source: 6]

On 1 November 1866, his widow, Sarah A Wood, married Daniel Green Truett, of Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. They were married by JA Stone, at the Rectory, St Martin's Protestant Episcopal Church, Marcus Hook. Daniel was born in 1836, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these four children:

In 1870, Sarah A Truitt was living in Lower Chicester Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She was living with Daniel (her husband), and Joseph and John (their children). Daniel was a fisherman, and owned $200 in personal property. [source: 12]

In 1880, Sarah A Truitt was living in Lower Chichester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her husband Daniel, and their children Joseph A, John, Maggie, and Sallie. Daniel was a laborer, and had been out of work 6 months in the previous year. [source: 13]

On 27 February 1890, Daniel G Truitt died, at Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, of tuberculosis. [source: 9]

In 1890, his widow, Sarah A Truitt, was living in Lower Chichester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [source: 7]

On 16 October 1902, she applied for a renewal of her pension, under the act of 3 March 1901. She was 56 years old, and lived in Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Her application was accepted on 3 January 1903, retroactive to 16 October 1902, at a rate of $12 per month. [source: 9]

On 2 June 1905, Sarah Ann (Wood) Truett died. [source: 9]
