Cecil James Murphy, 87, longtime Elmer resident died Friday at English Village
Manor Nursing Home. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Glad
Tidings Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Melvin Moody officiating. Burial
will follow in the Elmer Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral
Home. He was born July 6, 1913 at Noonday, Texas to Joe and Laura (Murray)
Murphy. He married Sylvia Clarice Canada in 1939 in Elmer. She died in December
of 1982. They made their home in Elmer since the 1940's. He worked for several
farmers in Jackson County for many years. He also worked as a custodian at the
Jackson County Courthouse and Altus Air Force Base. He was a longtime member of
the Hess Baptist Church. Survivors include five children, Sara Jo Swint and
husband, Frank of Rex, Ga., Edith Duke and husband, Kenneth of Tipton, Anita
Pair and husband, Eddie, James Murphy and wife, Julie and Sandy Callins and
husband, Fred all of Altus; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two
great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends. He was
preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother.
