"He (Matthias Giefer) came to Kansas about 1870 and laid claim there. A few years later, the grasshopper plague came on the morning of Aug 8th. The big green cloud descended and by noon the hoppers got four to six inches thick on the ground. They ate everything. Matthias was wiped out. He decided he would go back to Minnesota. He walked to Newton, Kansas to catch a train. The train couldn't move for three days because the hoppers were so thick on the tracks."
"Finally he did get to Minnesota where he stayed for three years. In 1876 he brought his brother Bernard and family to Kansas. There he discovered that an old German army buddy of his, named Carl Steinbushel, who had come over to the U.S. with him in 1870, had jumped his claim. So Math took another claim west of Andale. This tradition story was told by Math Giefer, grandson of Bernard, who lives in Kingman, Kansas."
