"James Lester Hale was born on March 17, 1903 to Effie and Henry Hale. Effie and Henry were both deaf mutes. Lester was not sure where he was born, but was raised on Carter Branch close to Hartsville, Tenn. Lester was the oldest of his 2 siblings: Hester, and Henry Jr. Lester's father Henry was a professional BaseBall Pitcher with the Nashville Vols. When Effie died of pneumonia, Lester was about 9 years old. Henry Hale got remarried to Myrtle Hume who was also deaf. The family moved to Hog Creek near Sugar Tree, Tenn. They lived there for 5 years and moved to Camden, Tenn. where Henry opened a shoe repair shop. Henry and Myrtle had 2 children, Terry O. Hale and Lottie Lou Hale. Lester quite high school during his 9th grade year and worked odd jobs.
Eventually he joined the wheat harvest and followed it to Okarche, OK. He decided he liked it there, and got a job. He needed a place to stay, and found a room with Mary Gassen.(w/o Barth Gassen) Here he met Marie Gassen,
(d/o Barth and Mary Gassen.) and they were married June 3, 1941 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Okarche, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma. In 1945, he bought a farm outside of Okarche and raised alfalfa, oats and wheat along with cattle. They never lived on the farm, but remained in town in the house Marie was raised in. In addition to farming, Lester opened a shoe repair shop and attracted business from many of the surrounding towns. He sold his farm in 1988 and his shoe shop in1992. He was an avid fisherman and did so until he was 90. He died on Jan 17, 1997 at his home in Okarche, Oklahoma."

Mary Elizabeth "Marie" Gassen was born Nov. 23, 1914 on a farm 4 miles s.w. of Okarche, Canadian county, Oklahoma. Barth and Mary Gassen rented this farm and did all the field work by hand, using a team of horses to pull the machinery.
Marie remembers a windmill that had a wooden platform around it. There were a couple loose boards that they could lift up. They had a big bucket tied to a long rope and her folks would put milk, cream and butter into the bucket. They then lowered it down into the well to keep it cool. They did this until they finally were able to get an ice box that would hold a 50 lb. block of ice.
They traveled by horse and buggy, using heated bricks wrapped in newspaper to keep their feet warm. She remembers traveling in snow so deep that the roads were all snowed shut. So they went across the fields, seeing only the tips of the fence posts above the snow as they went."

"George Hale was stillborn, cause was called a blue baby. Marie was never allowed to see the baby, they took him away as soon as he was born. Marie was quite ill and three days after birth, Father Steber came to see her and told her the baby had died and was already buried. Marie and Lester had planned to name him Patrick, but Father Steber told them that since it was the feast of St. George, he named him George."
