"We had many family members in the Sabine Pass area during the early 1800s. The area was one of the principal ports of Texas until the late 1800s. During that period of Sabine Pass history they were ravaged by several hurricanes. This eventually discouraged pioneer settlement and the family was forced to find commerce in other parts of the state. Port Arthur emerged farther inland because of the storms.
The land surrounding Sabine Pass is a low land surrounded by marsh and the coast. Today it is an important area for oil refineries."
