Historical Sketch of Johnson County
"In 1823, John B. Smock and
Isaac Smock moved from Mercer County, KY, and settled near the head-waters of
Pleasant Run. A road was cut out to Franklin, but from thereon the Smocks were
compelled to bush their own way, and they were two days about it. The next
year their brother James followed them and, in 1825, Garrett Brewer, Garrett Vandiver, Garrett Sorter, Robert Lyons and Joseph and Samuel Alexander also
came. The Smock settlement was a half-way house between Franklin and
Indianapolis, and from this may be accounted the fact of it comparatively slow
growth for many years."

The Brewer Family Ancestors and Descendants of Barney Verbryck Brewer
and His Son John Wesley Brewer Also Maternal and Allied Lines compiled by
Roselyne Watts Jones, 1982
"The first settlers to locate in what is now the city of Greenwood were
descendants of Dutch immigrants who came to New Amsterdam (New York) in 1642.
One of these descendants was Garret Brewer, who in 1825, settled on 160 acres,
all of which are now in Greenwood. He was born near Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania, in 1782. His parents, John and Jennie (VanArsdale) Brewer
moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, where he remained until he followed the Smocks
to Greenwood.
Garret Brewer, like his ancestors, was a devout Christian and a strong believer
in education. He was first ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church and the
First Sunday School was organized in his cabin. This cabin stood about
where the John Bailey's now live on Woodland Drive.
He died in 1860 and was buried in the old Presbyterian cemetery on North Madison
Avenue, which was once a part of his farm. Later, he was moved to the
Greenwood Cemetery which was also a part of his original land.
A son, Abram, was born in the cabin in 1830. He spent his entire life on
the Brewer farm and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Two granddaughters of Garret's, Mrs. Jessie bishop and Mrs. Hattie Sanford are
living on West Main street in Greenwood, a short distance from where they and
their father, Abram, were born.
Two great-grandchildren, Clarence Bishop and Stella Mae (Bishop) Toombs, who,
also, live on West Main Street, were born on the old Brewer property at Madison
and Euclid which is near Garret's homesite. One great-great-grandchild,
Lawrence Toby Toombs is the youngest descendant of Garret Brewer living in
Greenwood."
