Benjamin Herendeen, aka Hearndon, Harrington, Hearndale, etc. was inLynn, MA, in 1647 and removed to Providence shortly afterwards (4,20-22). About 1648 he married Elizabeth White. Together they had afamily of nine or ten children. He owned a house and farm of 25 acresin Providence, RI, located near the corner of North Main St. and whatwas then called Harrington Lane, now Rochambeau Ave. Part of his farmis now part of the North Burying Ground (21). His will was presentedfor probate 4/4/1688.
[4135]
Benjamin first appears in Providence, RI in 1651 when he had aprivilege of 25 acres for which he paid and received quittance inMarch. He was taxed 4 shillings in June of 1652. On 27 October 1656,Providence "ordered yt William White be accomodated with a house lotadjoining to Benjamin Herndell his house lot and further according toconvenience Ordered yt inlargeing of Benjamine Herndell his lot."(Early Providence Records)

On 17 February 1659, Benjamin was brought into court by a 10 poundbond to answer to "the breach of peace and fright committed on thefamily of william shite, of this towne." William White was also bonded10 pounds to appear at the next town court in Providence to prosecuteBenjamin (EPR 15:75-75)
[4137] He was probably living in Essex County, MA when he was presented inLynn for beating his wife, as witnessed by Ezekiel Gilbert and HenryCollins. Apparently Elizabeth was not free from scandal herself. Shewas presented for stealing clothes from Mary Pray and was ordered tomake double restitution. (Essex Court Files, 1:133, 137)
[4132] He has been described by one person as the son of John Harrington, b.abt 1595 in England; d. abt 1632 in Suffolk Co., MA. John Harringtonm. abt 1617 in England Ann Clinton, b. 1595 at Tyne, England; d. 25Dec 1653 in Middlesex Co., MA.
[4133] In his Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, Austin states thatBenjamin's will was presented for probate and an inventory of goodsand property totalling 142 pounds was taken on 27 May 1687 withoutciting a source. On 20 Oct 1688, "Elizabeth, now wife of Richard Pray, deeded to her son, Isaac Hearnden, the homestead, houses, orchard, etc. which were given her, for life, by the will of her late husband, dated 1 Feb 1686/87 (EPR 5:34-37). Since Isaac was the youngest childit has been suggested that this was a gift from Elizabeth to get himstarted in married life. He apparently deeded this back to her for shelater sold th land to Joseph Whipple of Providence.
