Antoinette Pliska, circa 1898
Antoinette Cecilia Pliska was born on 3 July 1886 in Bohemia.1,5,6,7,8 She was the daughter of Johann J. Pliska and Frances Dufek.3,4 She immigrated with her parents in 1888 to the United States of America. They may be the Pliska family that came through Port Baltimore on the ship Strassburg which landed on 23 May 1887. This will need additional research. Family stories indicate that one of the girls was sick with chicken pox and the entire family was detained at the hospital until she recovered.9 Follow the link to see a picture of Antoinette and her sister, Anna. This picture appears to be a confirmation and/or first communion picture. Follow the icon to see a picture of the Pliska family taken sometime after Frances (Dufek) Pliska died in 1894. Tony, age 13, was enumerated in the household of her father on the 1900 Federal Census in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.10 She is listed on the census as "Tony."10 Follow the link to see the census image. Tony worked as grocery clerk for her brother-in-law.
Antoinette married Vaclav J. Jahn, son of Adam Jahn von Neumark and Caterina Maurek, on 9 October 1904 in Omaha.11 Follow the link to see their wedding picture and their marriage record. He was 21 years old; she was 18. Their witnesses were Peter David and Mary Vecil (or Necil).11 Antoinette and James had at least 4 children. These children are Jeanne Emilie, James Frank, Edward Louis Johann Leitha and Cecelia.12
James, age 26, and Antonia, age 23, were enumerated on the 1910 Federal Census at 478 22nd Street in South Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Jenny (age 2) and Jimmy (age 4/12 - should be 4 weeks or 1 month). James is listed as a naturalized citizen.13 Her name is given as Antonia. Follow the link to see the census image.
James, age 35, and Antoinette, age 33, were enumerated on the 1920 Federal Census at 4609 South 20th Street in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Jeanne (age 12), James (age 9), and Edward (age 4). They own their house but it does have a mortgage.1 Follow the link to see the census image.1
James, age 45, and Antoinette, age 43, were enumerated on the 1930 Federal Census at 4609 South 20th Street in Omaha. Also enumerated in this household were two of their children, Jean (age 22, works as a teacher) and Edward (age 15). They own their house which was valued at $2500 and they have a radio. James is not a U.S. military veteran.14 They still own their own bakery and they both work as bakers. Follow the link to see the census image.14
James died on 9 April 1941, leaving Antoinette a widow.15 According to her son, Edward: "He left Antoinette Jahn with $12,000 of debts. Although she was not legally liable for this, she worked at Swanson's Frozen foods in Omaha, and later with the Union Pacific Railroad. During WWII, she worked for the Martin Bomber Assembly plant at Ft. Crook (B-29s), double and triple shifts. She had paid off the debts and accrued $16,000 which she lost in our business in San Antonio" (they had a laundry at business).16
About 1942, she lived with her son at Camp Forest in Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee until he moved to Ft. Hood about five months later.17 She moved back with her son to San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas and presumably lived with his family until she died.17 In December 1968, Antoinette was living in Brighton, Livingston County, Michigan.18
Antoinette died on 16 July 1974 in Mount Vernon, Franklin County, Texas.19,20,21 She was 88 old. The cause of death was "cardiovascular accident."17 She was buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Franklin County, Texas.22 Her Social Security Number was 507-12-0839 and was issued in Nebraska.6 According to the SSDI, her last residence was in Mount Vernon.6
