The Genealogy of the Millslagle Family

     Mary (?) was born circa 1785 in Virginia.^1,2 Her married name was Mrs. Mary Cooper but her husband's name is unknown.³
          Mary, age 65, was enumerated on the 1850 Federal Census in District #24, Hampshire County, Virginia. Also enumerated in her household were Joel (age 40), Margaret (age 34), John (age 13) and Benjamin McCauley (age 18). I am guessing about the relationship between Mary (grandmother), Joel (son), Margaret (daughter-in-law) and John (grandson). They may all be Mary's children. This will need more work to straighten out. Mary lives next door to Elizabeth (Cooper) Milslagle who also lives near her brother-in-law, Abraham Milslagle. Also living in the house is Benjamin McCauley who is listed as a laborer. Mary is illiterate.⁴ Follow the link to see the census image.
          Mary, age 74, was enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in North River Mills, Hampshire County, Virginia. Also enumerated in her household were three other people: Rebecca Milslagle, Lewis Hawkins, and Margaret Hawkins. Mary is the property owner and is listed as the head of house. She owns $4000 real estate and $955 personal estate. Lewis is a farmer but does not own land. Rebecca is a weaver. These four people seem unrelated but I suspect blood and marriage relationships between them.⁵ Follow the link to see the census image.
