Nelson is listed in the Franklin County, NY records as having enlisted in Company C of the 96th NY Infantry. He is listed in the 1890 Veterans Census for Brandon, Franklin Co., NY, but it is silent as to his service record.
Harriet filed a petition for a Widow's Pension on October 2, 1930. She listed Nelson's unit of service as Company B, 12th New York Infantry in the Declaration for Widow's Pension. A letter from C. H. Bridge of the War Department confirms Nelson did not appear in the Muster rolls for Company B, 12th NY Inf., but does state Nelson was treated from October 20, 1862 to March 5, 1863 at Fort Wood, Bedloe's Island, New York Harbor for bronchitis as a private in Co. B, 12th Regiment New York Infantry.
Nelson's death certificate states his place of birth as Malone, NY, as does the Descriptive and Historical Register of Enlisted Soldiers In the Army (1861-1862, page 192). The Register lists Nelson as 5' and 5" tall when he enlisted at the age of 18 on July 30, 1861 in Ogdensburg, NY. It also states he had black hair, black eyes, and a dark complexion.
Nelson and Harriet are buried in the Chase Cemetery in Lysander, NY.
