Book of McKee, pg 194 states William, Jr. was not quite age 14 in 1826 when his father and the others left him alone in Illinois with his aunt Sarah Thompson with her three children and his elder sister Cassie, young wife of Joel Tullis. Later on the page it quotes William McKee, Jr's family bible which gave his date and place of birth. He went to Oregon in 1839 as a single man, hoping the climate would improve his ill health, and stayed 12 months, returning again with the Joel Tullis caravan in 1847. William Jr. was a veteran of the Black Hawk War of 1832 and served with Whitman's Volunteers against the Indians in Oregon Territory. He returned to Illinois in 1852.
