Photographed*circa 1885 She was photographed circa 1885
From Evelyn Delgado, uc1delgado@ix.netcom.com, May 2000: "No one has identified the older woman in the front, but I believe that is Sarah Jane. The idea put forward now is that Sarah Jane's surname was Stinnett and her mother was Mary Cox. This is a new development for me; a real surprise, so I'll have to work through this to see how I am related to her.

The man standing behind her is Ephraim (Eph) Culpepper, her son. One of the men standing next to Eph is William B. (W.B.) Boydstun. I believe it is the fellow in the checked suit. Could the other person be H.T. Boydstun?

The woman sitting next to Sarah Jane in the striped dress is my great-grandmother Harriet Isabelle (Belle) Shuster Cox. She is married to John David (J.D.) Cox who is standing on the far right.

The woman in the front row with all the buttons down the front of her dress is Ora Culpepper, Eph's wife. I don't know who the woman is who is standing in front of J.D.. Actually she looks a lot like his daughter (my grandmother) turned out to be as an adult woman.

One woman might be W.B.'s wife and the other woman might be his sister Amy.

I believe this picture was taken about 1885 when John married Belle. I have another picture of them together wearing the same clothing. I had wondered if it were a wedding picture. If so, this was taken in MO. Sarah Jane would have been about 50 years old.

Eph and J.D. were best friends and were together often in Idaho."4

Death*20 June 1901 She died at Roseberry, Valley Co., Idaho, on 20 June 1901 at age 65.
Biography* Last name based on Sarah's 1851 marriage record. Others believe Sarah Jane's maiden name was Cox.

Frederick Miller Grimes1

M, (25 May 1805 - 9 December 1889)
Birth*25 May 1805 Frederick was born at Sumner Co., Tennessee, on 25 May 1805.
Marriage*2 February 1837 He married Elmira Susan Farley at Austin Co., Texas, on 2 February 1837 at age 31.
Death*9 December 1889 He died at Blooming Grove, Navarro Co., Texas, on 9 December 1889 at age 84.
Burial*circa 10 December 1889 His body was interred circa 10 December 1889 at White Church Cemetery, Blooming Grove, Navarro Co., Texas
Biography* Frederick was one of the original settlers of Texas in Stephen F. Austin's colony. He was at the Battle of San Jacinto which set Texas free. He participated in numerous military campaigns, including the Battle of San Antonio, Anahuac, and the Battle of Velasco.

Frederick Miller Grimes I, came to Texas from Tennessee with his parents, George and Eurydicy Grimes, in early 1826 as a colonist in Austin's second colony. F.M. is on the List of Colonists, just below his parents and the other members of their family. At this time, F.M. was 22 and claimed land for himself.

In 1833 he fought with Capt Simms against the Hueco Indians and was actively involved in the Texas Revolution - Battle of Quintana (Oct 26, 1835); Siege of Bexar (Dec 7 1835); and under Capt R. McNutt and Gipson Kuykendall in the Battle of San Jacinto (April 21).

The following year he marries Elmira Susan FARLEY who had come to Texas with her parents, Henry and Nancy FARLEY, in 1831. Her father died before claiming his land, so this portion (Coryell Co) came to Elmira and her sister, Mary, who had remained in Mississippi.

F.M. and Elmira began their family in Austin County and then moved to Coryell Co in 1852 being among the first settlers near Fort Gates. Their children married and moved to various parts of Texas.

Two of their sons, Thomas and Henry, were tragically killed as young men, in Waco, Tx. in Oct 1869. They had just completed a cattle drive, and were celebrating the coming marriage of Thomas. After leaving the saloon, they rode around the square shooting their pistols into the air. The Reconstruction period Sheriff and men pursued them as they rode up Austin Avenue, and the two were killed.

In their later years, F.M. (1882) and Elmira moved to Blooming Grove, Navarro County, to live near their sons, Sam and F.M. II. They are buried in White Church Cemetery, Blooming Grove, (Navarro Co.) Texas.

Research note* There are significant discrepancies in the dates of death for both Walter Boston Culpepper and his wife Ruby Blanche Morse Culpepper. For Walter, the cemetery record says 1969, but the FL Death Index says 1960. For Ruby, the cemetary record says 1949 but the FL death index says 1941. We have assumed here that the Flroda Death Index is correct, and in the case of Ruby's death, this assumption fits the fact that Walter divorced Mary in 1946. If you can confirm any of these dates please contact Warren Culpepper.4

Birth*circa 1862 Ephraim was born at Arkansas circa 1862.
(household member) 1870 Census1 June 1870 Josephine, Ephraim, Laura, Peter and Sarah listed as a household member living with Howell Terrance Boydston on the 1870 Census at Granby Township, Newton Co., Missouri.1

Photographed*circa 1885 He was photographed circa 1885

Eph and J.D. were best friends and were together often in Idaho."3

1st I am from the Bartlett Boudstun line. Margaret Anna Boydstun, Howell's sister.
I hate loose ends, so have been trying to find out about Ephraim Culpepper. I stumbled across the Illinois State Archives site where they have posted all there marriages(or most of them) & there was Ephraim Culpepper & Sarah J. Stennett md june 29 1851 Schuyller Co Illinois. Also a William Stennett, who md a Mary Cox Dec 25 1834 Schuyller. I am working on finding William & Mary in 1850 to see if I can prove they are the parents of Sarah. 1850 census of Schuyller is not in good condition & so far no luck.
Ephraim Jr. married Ora Bell Leffingwell, Mar 12 1907 in Burnet Co Texas
I have been told Ephraim died Jan 29 1926 Idaho, but have NOT been able to find death record also looked in Oregon. I have Laura Culpepper md to Robert A. Martin, July 26 1877, Newton Co Mo. I have her b. in Ark, & the rest of the children in Mo. no record of the rest of the children, Peter, Josephine.. I am hoping a relative of the Culpepper name will turn up. Howell Boydstun decendants don't seem to know what happened to the Culpepper children.2
