Notes

"They lived near Cragfont in a house built about 1825 on land that was inherited by Almira from her father's estate. Designed to serve as a stage coach stop, it is considered a splendid example of the log cabin type of architecture, and is now the oldest structure of its type and size in Tennessee. Although it never became a stop on the stage coach line, the Wynne family established a very successful spa there, called "Castalian Springs". The land was farmed and the home was occupied by the Wynne family until the death of George W. Wynne. It is now maintained by the State and known as "Wynnewood" to avoid confusion with the name of the nearby community of Castalian Springs."

"Colonel Alfred R. WYNNE was a son of Robert and Cynthia (HARRISON) WYNNE. He was born in Sumner County n 1800. He received a good education at Hickory Ridge, Wilson County, then, at the age of 16 years, returned to his native county and became a clerk in a store at Cairo, where he remained for several years, then commenced business on his own account at the same place. Three years later he sold out and engaged in the milling business at Stamps Mill. In 1834 he purchased a farm at Castalian Springs, where he continued to reside until his death. He was a Colonel of militia, having command of 1200 men under the old military laws. In 1866 he was elected a State Senator and served one term. He was for forty-seven years postmaster at Castalian Springs. In March 1824 he married Almira, a daughter of General James and Susan BLACK WINCHESTER. Fourteen children were born to them, some of whom are now living in Sumner County at the old Castalian Springs farm.

Colonel WYNNE had one sister, Cynthia, who married Albert Gallatin DONOHO, of Trousdale County, and whose son, Dr. DONOHO, has for years been a prominent physician of Hartsville.

Colonel Wynne's wife inherited from her father an interest in the property known as Bledsoe's Lick. He organized a company, which erected the large log buildings and occupied as a hotel during the summer months. He gave to the place the name "Castalian Springs." Later he purchased the other interests and became the sole owner. At his death the property passed to his three children, Winchester WYNNE, of Gallatin; Misses Sue and Louisa WYNNE, who reside at the old place. The two sons of Winchester WYNNE, George and Edmond WYNNE, reside with their parents in the old home."

Col. A. R. Wynne was born in Sumner County in 1800, and is now one of the leading farmers and stock raisers of the First District. His parents were Robert and Cynthia (Harrison) Wynne. The father was a native of North Carolina, and moved with his parents to Sumner County when a boy; he married in this county, and soon after moved to Wilson County where he died in the prime of life in 1802. The mother was born in South Carolina, and died in Jackson, Miss., a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. After the death of his father our subject lived with his grandfather Wynne until sixteen years of age in Wilson County, receiving most of his education at Hickory Ridge, in same county. Mr. Wynne then returned to Sumner County, and entered a mercantile house at Cairo, where he clerked for several years, then commenced business upon his own responsibility at the same place, but sold out three years later and went to Stampson's Mill, and engaged in the milling business.

In 1834 he purchased the farm on which he now resides, and has since then made it his home, owning 432 acres of Sumner County's most valuable land, the home tract of 290 acres being at Castalian Springs. Mr. Wynne is one of the leading farmers of Sumner County, is widely known and respected by all. Under the old military rules he was colonel of the militia having command of 1,200 men between Gallatin and Hartsville.

In 1866 he was elected to represent Sumner County in the upper branch of the State Legislature. March, 1825, he married Miss Elmira, daughter of Gen. James and Susan Winchester, of Sumner County.

Fourteen children were born to this marriage, three sons and three daughters living: Joseph G., Andrew J. of Alabama, Winchester, Louisa, Susan and Mary M. Mrs. Wynne was born in Sumner County in 1804, and died in 1882, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mr. Wynne has been a life-long Democrat; his first presidential vote was cast for Gen. Jackson in 1828. He was a great admirer of Jackson, Polk and Johnson. He is an influential and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and has been postmaster at Castalian Springs for forty-seven years."
