Mother: Pauline CUMMINS |
After his wife, Arabella died, Nathaniel felt he could not
adequately care for and educate all five children. He entered
into a contract with a relative, Wiley F. Davis of Sumter Co.
SC, giving him sole custody and care of his two older children,
John (10 years) and Eva (8 years). The contract stipulated that
should it become evident at anytime that the children were being
neglected or mistreated the contract would be voided and the
children returned to Nathaniel. The contract also provided that
the children could return if they became dissatisfied. John
stayed and grew up with the Davis family, but Eva asked to be
returned to her father's home.
Nathaniel's stepmother, Mary Shuler Owens McCants took care of
Jessie, the youngest child.
Nathanield wrote a letter Feb 25, 1890 to the mother of Aurelia
asking for her hand in marriage. He purchased the Methodist
parsonage at McBeth in 1901. Nathaniel joined Rehoboth
Methodist Church at McBeth, Cordesville Charge, Berkeley Co.
when the Rev. W. C. Gleaton was pastor, in a meeting conducted
by Rev. W. F. Gault.
Nathaniel served as Sunday School Superintendant, read his Bible
daily and was a true Christian man. On July 1, 1921 he became
trustee of Berkeley School District 8, and served 29 years as
clerk for the Board of County Commissioners of Berkeley Co.
