§ Julien (or Julian) Van Thuyne   from Dixmude, born February 1833, emigrated to the U.S.A., a laborer, on ship American Eagle, from London to New York, arriving there March 15, 1856. Two year later, April 28, 1858 he enlisted in Newport, Kentucky in the 10th Infantry, Co. H. The 10th Infantry was stationed at Fort Bridger, on the Oregon trail but in June was sent to Salt Lake City. . The troops were employed in arresting and guarding civil prisoners, upon the requisitions of U. S. Marshals, and supporting officers at the U. S. Courts

In 1860, Indian troubles rose in New Mexico with the Navajo tribes, and among others, company H was sent to Fort Garland, New Mexico. In 1862, they were at Pinos Ranch, near Santa Fé. On the 21st of February, they were engaged in the battle of Val Verde. Latter that year, they were sent to Washington, arriving there November 7 and joined the Army of the Potomac.

The 10th Infantry was at Fredericksburg, Malvern Hill and second Bull Run. Julian Vanthuyne  was discharged April 28, 1863 and returned to civil life. No trace of him in the 1870 census, but the 1880 one give us a lot of information. He was established in Philadephia, North side Vine Street, a cigar dealer and married with Anna, 32 year old from Hessen, Germany. 6 children : Louisa, 15 y.o., Martha 13 y.o., borns in New Jersey, Julian, 7 y.o;, Etrebil 5 y.o., Alford 2 y.o.,, borns in Pennsylvania.

He lived there all his life, Anna died December 3, 1899 and he followed her in 1914. The two of them were buried in the Holy Cross XE "Cross"  Cemetery in Yeadon[1] near Philadelphia.
