Benjamin Coddington, b. at Woodbridge, NJ. 8 Oct. 1680, d. there 18 Apr. 1753 (gravestone, with dates, still standing in Presbyterian Churchyard, Woodbridge). He was called a "yeoman," and served in 1715 as a soldier in the Middlesex militia, in Col. Thomas Farmer's Regiment. He married two wives, both named "Mary" (and the surname of neither one is known), and by them had 22 children....Benjamin Coddington's will was dated 26 May 1750 and probated 19 May 1753 (original will on file in NJ State Archives)." (John I. Coddington letter to Charles W. Coddington, 9 June, 1969).
Christened Sep 8, 1680, Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., NJ. His father, in his will, deeded to his son, Benjamin, three score acres of upland and eight acres of meadow, together with houses, fences, orchards, gardens dated 28 Apr 1713.

"His tombstone could be seen in 1892 in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Woodbridge. It bore this inscription:
Here lyes ye body
of Ben Jamin Codington Aged 73 years
Dec'd April ye 18th 1753

Next to this tombstone is one bearing this inscription: John, son of Benjamin and Mary Codington dec'd July ye 20th 1733 Aged 14 years 4 mos & 20 Ds. Adjoining the tombstone of Benjamin and John stands one having this inscription:
lyeth ye
of Isaac--dington
who departed this life
May the 31st 1729"

Dear Norman, An abstract of the will of the father of this Mary Coddington is found on page 63 of the NJ "Calendar of Wills, 1751-1760".

"Benjamin Codington, Sr., of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, yeoman" wrote his will on 26 May 1750. The will was proved on 19 May 1753. The original is to be found in Liber F2, page 120. In the will Benjamin names his wife "Mary". He then enumerates his abundant children and thoughtfully includes the names of his daughters' spouses:

Margaret, wife of Abner Wright Sarah, wife of William Oliver Mary, wife of William Pangburn Martha, wife of Jonathan Frazee Elizabeth, wife of Solomon Bycount Lydia, wife of Job Couger, Jr. Zillah, wife of Enoch Couger Rebecca Mary (called Mary Codington) Sabrah Elizabeth Codington Benjamin Thomas Isaac John Ashur Uzziah Joatham Reuben

The executors were Benjamin's wife with sons Benjamin and Isaac. The witnesses were Francis Everitt, William Messenger, and Thomas Chapman.

The inventory was taken on 30 Apr 1753 by Isaac Prall and William Moore. The estate was worth 171 Pounds and 5 shillings.

"WILLIAM PANGBURN (b. about 1704; d. 1759, Woodbridge, New Jersey) married about 1727, MARY CODDINGTON. Her father was BENJAMIN CODDINGTON, b. 1680 in Woodbridge, New Jersey. WILLIAM PANGBURN was apparently a child of EDMUND PANGBURN (who died 1711, Woodbridge, NJ) and LYDIA ________. Does anyone have any further background on these people -- their parents, siblings, children, etc.?" 225

Benjamin married Mary I, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, in 1701 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, USA. (Mary I was born Ca 1683 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, USA and died in 1722-1729 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, USA.)
