Frances "Fran" L. Colby, 95, died June 21, 2006 at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home in Fremont, NH after a period of failing health. She was born May 12, 1911 in Center Harbor, NH, daughter of the late James and Hilda (Sworoski) Blake.

Fran grew up in Meredith, NH and was a graduate of Meredith High School. The family formerly owned and operated Sanborn's Drug Store. Fran's mother passed away at a young age, which left Fran the responsibility of raising her siblings.

She graduated from nursing school in Haverhill, MA in 1932 and spent many years employed in private family practices as a registered nurse. In the early 1940's, Fran married Alden D. Colby. He predeceased her in 1992. Mrs. Colby was a member of the Danville Baptist Church and the Ladies Missionary Society, she was also involved with many local organizations in Danville.

Fran was a former longtime resident of Haverhill and Lowell, MA and Danville, NH. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Marden of Brooksville, FL, and Martha Livingstone of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and several nieces and nephews. There are no calling hours. Fran requested that a Memorial Service be held on a Sunday after morning worship. This will take place on July 30th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Frances Colby, to the Danville Baptist Church.

GROVELAND, Mass. -- Pauline M. "Polly" Colby, 95, formerly of Main Street in Pittsfield, died Tuesday [May 25, 2004] at the home of her daughter in Groveland, Mass., after a short illness.

She was born in Andover, Maine, [October 25, 1908] the daughter of Calvin and Mary (Jank) Crooker.

She lived in Norwood, Mass., before moving to Pittsfield in 1951.

Colby was a member of the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield, where she was a member of the Dorcas Guild and the Ladies Aid.

She was a member and past worthy matron of the Pleiades Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Pittsfield and a longtime member of the Pittsfield Women of Rotary.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Colby of Rochester and Bruce Colby of Lexington Park, Md.; a daughter, Barbara Band of Groveland, Mass.; a sister, Louise Leach of Tilly, New Brunswick, Canada; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Charles Colby, died in 1975.

Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Perkins Funeral Home and Monument Co., 60 Main St., Pittsfield.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Pittsfield.

The Rev. Charles Paige-Morgan, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Floral Park Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, Mass. 01840.

Double Funeral For Father, Daughter


Hillsborough--Double funeral services will be held tomorrow for Frank Blood Crosby and his daughter, Mrs. Esther Elizabeth Colby, who died within a few hours of each other last Sunday [18 Jan 1942]. Mrs. Colby had been ill for some time at the home of her sister in Worcester, Mass. Mr. Crosby died in Concord. He is survived by six sons: Warren, Robert, Edward, Everett, Merrick and George Crosby; and two daughters, Mrs Grace Hare and Mrs. Jessie Delano. Mrs. Colby is survived by her husband, Burton Scott Colby, six brothers and two sisters.
