January 2, 1918 to January 13, 1918

 

January 2nd and 3rd, 1918   working Night and Day on wheels on Robert Jenkins and Jim Brown   these Wheels are now most all new

A Gang of men went to Fayette City to repair wheels on Steamers Bertha - Beacon - and Active right out in the Middle of the river        worked off the ice and built a new wheel on Steamer Active   finished Monday January 6, 1918    the Duquesne is froze up in this pool and cannot get up or down

January 3, 1918 Thursday morning   12 degrees below zero   the Ice from 9" to 14 in thick. Navigation suspended   I have not seen a Boat going up or down for two days   the men are trying to work   the lumber is geting bad to work with   so much ice

Building new Wheel on Steamer J.C. Risher   useing Iron Circle off the old wheel of Steamer Voyager   trying to adjust this old circle and fighting ice all the time   we are up against it Bad

Saturday January 12, 1918   this is the third week of fierce cold weather    today it was only 6 above and the worst wind I ever saw   cuts you all to pieces   still I had about 15 men on the Steamer Monitor    the river is tight and not a boat moveing

Sunday January 13, 1918 everybody froze in   4 degrees Below Zero and fierce wind   colder on Tuesday January 15 with wind and snow
