Pedigree of Elizabeth Jones Holt
Isaac Thomas Sr. was born in 1735 at Frederick County, Virginia.5,3,6 He was the son of John Thomas and Lucretia Hart.4 Isaac Thomas Sr. married Elizabeth Massengill, daughter of Henry Lucas Massengill and Mary Cobb, on 11 June 1783 at Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee.7,3 Isaac Thomas Sr. died on 30 October 1818 at Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee, Information from the files of Ann Ruth Jones.8 He was buried in November 1818 at Thomas Family Cemetery, Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee, Isaac is buried in the town he helped found.8
During the Revolutionary War the British occupyed part of South Carolina and threatened, in the person of one Colonel Patrick Ferguson, to 'march over the mountains, hang your leaders, and lay the country to waste with fire and sword, if you do not surrender and pledge your loyalty to the crown.' General John Sevier, along with Isaac Shelby, organized an army and set out to stop the British. It was sort of an army. It was made up of mountain men, each in whatever garb he could get together. They all had hunting rifles, and most of them were riding horses of one description or another. The over-the-mountain men had no desire to drive them from the mountain. They liked them right where they were. They selected 900 men of their own who had the freshest horses, made a night march and were at the foot of King's Mountain on the next morning. They spread out around the ridge and had Ferguson and his men 'treed like possums." In Tennessee they still teach about how Isaac Thomas led the attack against King's Mountain in their public schools. After the battle, Isaac Thomas gave up his meandering ways and settled down on the Forks of the River. A settlement grew up around him, and he named it 'Sevierville' after his friend, the General. The first session of the County Court of the new Sevier County was held in the home of Isaac and Elizabeth. I wonder what old Isaac would think of the area he helped settle and develop if he could see it now?9,7
