News/Obit | 9 February 1962 | Family of Nine Left Homeless as Blaze Sweeps Region Home A family of nine was left homeless by fire which destroyed a six-room frame house at Merrittstown Thursday evening. The blaze in the home of Frank Grahek apparently was caused by an overheated stove, and was fought by Allison and Tower Hill No. 2 firemen. They were hindered by lack of water in the area, and remained at the scene three hours to bring the fire under control. Mrs. Grahek is a surgical patient in Brownsville General Hospital, and the father had left the home, apparently to visit her. The seven children, ranging in age from one to 15 years were in the home alone at the time of the blaze. A neighbor, Joseph Verbanic, called firemen. The blaze destroed the home and its contens and a nearby utility pole, cutting off telephone service to the area for several hours. Tower Hill sent 12 volunteers to the scene, and Allison No. 2 sent 15 men and two trucks. Damage was estimated at $5,000. The children were taken to the Verbanic home. Published in The Daily Courier, (Connellsville, PA), Friday, February 9, 1962, Principal=Frank Grahek6 |
