Shortly after the Revolutionary War Reverend* Henry Gaines moved
with his family from Virginia to western Laurens County. Several
of his sons purchased land along the Augusta-Greenville Stage
coach road, now know as Indian Mound Road. According to his
tomb-stone, Rev.* Henry Gaines was critically injured in 1796
while working on Knights bridge across the Saluda River. Soon
after he died of his injuries and was buried on Gaines property
a short distance from the Stage Coach road. In September 1801
Richard Gaines sold 90 acres of his property to James Clardy.
People continued to bury dead in the Gaines graveyard until it
became known as Clardy's Cemetery, the name which it still bears
to this day.
After a careful inspection, difficult because of undergrowth, I
counted 24 sunken graves marked by field stones or no marker at
all, one standing memorial stone, that of Henry Gaines and one
grave marker lying flat. L.G. 10-20-93
* February 18, 2002: I've heard from one of the Gaines Family
researchers, that this Henry Gaines may not have been the
"Reverend" Gaines. Ed Gaines writes, "Your site refers to Rev.
Henry Gaines 1731-1796, who died of injuries suffered while
building a bridge across the Saluda River. That is the correct
Henry for that story, but I do not think he was ever referred to
as 'Rev.' That title was often used for my ancestor, Henry
Gaines 1737-1830." Here's Ed's email address:
