Joseph FERGUSON (FARGUSON)

ABT 1725 - AFT 1780

ID Number: I24546

  • RESIDENCE: GA & Henry Co. VA & Iowa
  • BIRTH: ABT 1725
  • DEATH: AFT 1780
  • RESOURCES: See: [S125]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) FERGUSON\FARGUSON\FARGESON of Virginia & Georgia

Family 1 : Patience GATEWOOD

Notes

Joseph went to Iowa after death of Patience. Deed of Trust p. 258, 21 Apr 1779 - Joseph Farguson & wife Patience gave up to Ann Frazer, 2 negroes which Ann "Lends to her mother Patience Farguson". etc.

Joseph was listed as from GA along with Richard Copleland (Deed Bk 3 & 4 p. 304-5) 26 Jan 1791-Power of Atty from Elizabeth Baker of N. Hampton Co. VA to Richard Stockton & James Anthony of Henry Co. VA & several people in Wilkes & Greene Cos. GA to collect from Joseph F. Farguson & Richard Copeland.

An heir of Ellizabeth Gatewood Copeland's was suing Patience's husband & some other children of Elizabeth Gatewood Copeland for the share of est Elizabeth should have rec'd from Patience, Their gr uncle, George Reeves, left assets to the 2 sisters, Elizabeth & Patience; in the event either left no children of their own, the surviving sister was to take all. Since Nancy Frazer Gatewood (Ann) was not dead at this time, it appears Patience did not have any children of her own & that Nancy was a step-dau & poss dau of Thomas Gatewood. Nancy called Patience "Mother" in Henry Co. deed, m. John Wash in 1779.

Notes

"among them the Rev. Launcelot Minor, whose remains are on the African shore, along-side of those of Mrs. Susan Savage, the devoted missionary, whose spiritual birthplace was St. George's Church, as Fredericksburg was that of her other nativity. Mr. McGuire and he who makes this allusion entered the ministry at a short interval apart, and cannot be long separated in leaving it behind, for another and we trust higher ministry, in the presence of our Redeemer."

Notes

Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article XLVIII.
"I must say, however, that I have never regarded either the Venables or Watkinses as 'bigots to Presbytery' as such. And in this connection it would be false delicacy in me to refrain from stating a fact which was notorious in that county. The leading mind in that whole region, whether among the clergy or laity, was that of Colonel Samuel W. Venable, (eldest son of Colonel Nathaniel Venable above mentioned,) and of whom you will find some notice in the memoir of Dr. Alexander, of Princeton. Two of his brothers, Abraham and Richard, were known as public characters, while he remained in private life; but they always veiled their pretensions in his presence, partly from affection, but more from deference to the ascendent intellect and acknowledged wisdom of their elder brother, which impressed all who approached him. His early life, it is believed, was unstained as to morality; but, although an alumnus of Princeton, it was not until after the Revolution that he gave in his adhesion to the religion of his mother and grandmother, which had now also become that of his wife. He had fought bravely in the war, and was a decided republican in his political sentiments. Would it be too much to suppose that his settled hostility to the spirit of the English Government had somewhat jaundiced his view of the Constitution of her Church? Colonel V. was eminently a practical man,--a stern patriot and friend of good order in society, public spirited, and a patron of all improvement. Now, the bitter waters of infidelity, which had begun to appear in other parts of the State, were not unknown there, and on the outbreak of the French Revolution society in Virginia was menaced as it were with a deluge of false philosophy and its train of evils. It was to stem this tide that he and those who co-operated with him set themselves. It was not for a party that he contended, but for the substance of Christianity itself, which he believed to be in peril. As this was essential to the very existence of free society, all other questions were regarded as secondary. His numerous engagements did not permit him to enter deeply into any scriptural investigation of the relative claims of the different forms of Church Government; and, had it been otherwise, there were few to aid or sympathize with him."
