Mother: Mary KELLER |
Commander of the 35th Regiment, Georgia Militia, from 1856 to
1861.
Entered Confederate service as 1st Lieutenant, Banks' Partisan
Rangers (later Company B, 21st Georgia Cavalry Battalion).
Banks' Partisan Rangers was an irregular unit established under
the Confederate law of April 21st, 1862. The men who enlisted in
these irregular units tended to be contemptuous of authority and
discipline, while the officers tended to be men of the gentry
class seeking to defend their homes on their own terms.
Captain, Company B, 21st Georgia Cavalry Battalion.
In December 1863, men under Captain Harrison's command captured
a Federal landing party from the USS Perry sent ashore to
destroy a Confederate vessel under construction in Murrell's
Inlet, South Carolina. One the Federals captured was a free
black from New England used as a scout. He apparently was
attired in civilian clothing and was regarded as a spy, and
accordingly, he was hanged. Captain Harrison, being one of the
two senior commanders present, in all likelihood ordered the
execution. The Federals were much put out over the incident, but
it was in line with the accepted rules of dealing with
combatants using civilian garb for concealment of their
purposes.
Captain, Company E, 7th Georgia Cavalry.
Captured at the Battle of Trevilian Station, June 1864.
Imprisonment on Hilton Head Island as one of the Immortal 600.
1860 Census: Township: Cherokee Hill 8 D Chatham County, Georgia
