Annanias Berkey

Before the war

He was born on 14 December 1833, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, to Reverend Henry Berkey, and Louisa Philson (7, 9). [sources: date: 17; 3 (31 in 1865), 7, 9, 13 (16 in 1850), 14 (26 in 1860), 15 (76 in 1910). place: 7, 9, 13, 14, 15, 17. parents: 7, 9, 13, 17 (Henry Berkey and Anna Philson)]

In 1850, he was living in Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Henry and Louisa Berkey, and with Mary Ann, Harrison, Ann, Rosanna, Catharine, and Philson Berkey (presumably siblings), and Henry Good. He was a carpenter, and had attended school within the year. [source: 13]

He attended public schools and worked on the farm. He learned carpentry, and owned teams, running a general hauling business. [source: 9]

He married Mary Ann Atchinson. She was born in 1839/1840, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, to James Atchison and Mary Pritz. They had these children:

He also served in company A of the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry. [sources: 5, 6]

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 11 March 1865. He was mustered in as a private, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company B. [sources: 1, 3, 6, 9, 18, 20, 21, 22]

He was "not to be charged"--perhaps for lost equipment, when the regiment mustered out. [source: 2]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company B. [sources: 1, 3, 6, 18, 20, 21, 22]

His wife died on 24 May 1880. [source: 9]

In 1880, he was living in Milford Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his children Elizabeth, Mary Louisa, Ida, William, Charles, and Samuel. He was a farm laborer. [source: 11]

He again applied for a pension on 1 March 1907, presumably under the Act of 6 February 1907. He received $15 per month, retroactive to 1 March 1907; the certificate was dated 4 October 1907. [sources: 6, 19]

His pension was increased to $20 per month, retroactive to 15 January 1909. The certificate was dated 28 January 1909. [source: 19]

Berkey (V) Annanias son of Henry and Louise Berkey, was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, December 14, 1833. He attended the public school, and worked on the farm until reaching a suitable age, then began learning the carpenter's trade, always a favorite one in the family. He also owned teams and did a general hauling business. He enlisted as a volunteer in Company E, 133rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, in August, 1862, serving nine months and seeing hard service, including the battles of Frederickburg and Chancellorsville, returning home with an honorable discharge. He was drafted in 1865 and served four months in the 91st Pennsylvania Regiment, but was not called into active service. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church, his wife also being a communicant. He married Mary Atchison, who died May 24, 1880, daughter of James and Mary (Pritz) Atchison, of English and German descent, both born in Somerset County, where they died. James Atchison was a good carpenter, and owned a farm. They were parents of seven children, one son, Henry Atchison, serving in the civil war.
