91st PA: Thomas Linton

Thomas Linton

Before the war

He was born in August 1828 (7; 2 (34 in 1861), 6 [40 in 1870], 4 [50 in 1880], 7 [71 in 1900]). He was born in Ireland (2, 4, 6, 7).

He immigrated to the United States in 1854 (7).

Sometime around 1857 [?], he married Isabella [unknown family name] (7). In 1900, she reported having had two children, both of whom were alive (7). However, the 1870 census suggests they had at least these children (6):

When he was enlisted, he was a laborer (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (2). He enlisted and was mustered into service for one year, as a substitute, on 17 March 1865, at Lancaster Pennsylvania (1, 2 [appears to have 7 March, but it could be 17]). He was enlisted and mustered into service by Captain Strouse (2). He was a private in company E (1, 9).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a private, in company E (9).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Drumore, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Isabella, and with five children (presumably their): Isabella, Jenette, Agnes, Robert, Charles, and Sarah (6). He was a farmer, and owned $1000 in real estate and $3000 in personal property (6).

In 1880, he was living in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with his wife Isabella Linton, and child Charles Linton (4). He was a farmer (4).

He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 25 February 1881 (3, 8).

In 1890, he was living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (post office Mechanics Grove) (5). He had chronic diarrhea and sunstroke (5).

In 1900, he was living in East Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Isabella and a housekeeper (7). He was a landlord (7). He was a naturalized citizen (7).

He died on 13 October 1901 (8).

His widow, Isabella Linton, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 13 January 1902 (3, 8).
