Hugh Martin

Before the war

He was born in 1816/17 (6 (44 in 1861), 8 (46 in 1860)). He was born in Derry, Ireland (6, 8).

Based on his children's birthplaces, he married Margaret [unknown family name] in Ireland, and immigrated to the United States between 1842 and 1846 (8).

In 1860, he was living in the 17th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with Margaret (presumably his wife), and with Margaret, Rosanna, George, and Ellen (presumably their children) (8). He was a weaver, and owned $300 in personal property (8).

When he enlisted, he was a weaver (6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (6).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 13 November 1861 (1, 6). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (6). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Lieutenant Morris Kayser (1, 6, 10, 11).

He deserted on 23 March 1862, from Franklin Square Barracks (4). He returned from desertion on 31 July 1862 (4).

On 23 February 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty at Windmill Point Hospital (2).

He deserted on 30 May 1863, from hospital (1, 5). On 31 March 1864, he was dropped as a deserter (3). He was a private, in company K (10, 11).

After the war

On 10 September 1867, his widow, Margaret Martin, applied unsuccessfully for a pension (7, 9).
