When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey [?] eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He was a substitute for C Bradly (1, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 7 March 1865 (1, 3, 12). He was enlisted for one year, at N Brinton [?] Pennsylvania, by Cathburton (3). He was a private in company K (1, 13). His service was credited to the 92nd subdivision of the 24th congressional district (3).

He was discharged by general order 77 [?] War Department, on 19 May 1865, while in the field in Virginia (1, 2, 12). He was a private, in company K (13).

After the war

On 14 December 1869, he married Sarah Ann Kilgore, at West Jefferson, Ohio (5, 11). (She was born on 26 April 1845, to John Kilgore and Malona Case Beach (11).) They had six children:

They moved to Colfax, Illinois (5).

In 1880, he was living in Lawndale Township, McLean County, Illinois (6). He was a farmer (6). He was living with his wife Sarah, and children Ora, Mattie, Frankie, Albert, and Samuel (6).

On 18 November 1891, he applied unsuccessfully from Illinois for a pension (4, 12).

Sarah Stauffer died on 9 October 1893 (5). She is buried in Colfax, Illinois (5).

In 1896/1897, he married Margaret [unknown surname] (7, 8). In 1900 and 1910, she had had one child, who was no longer alive (7, 8). This was her second marriage (8).

In 1900, he was living in Colfax, McLean County, Illinois (7). He was a farmer (7). He was living with his wife Margarett, and children Samuel and Eva (7).

In 1910, he was living in Colfax Village, Martin Township, McLean County, Illinois (8). He was living on his own income (8). He was living with his second wife Margaret (8).

In 1920, he was living in Colfax Village, Martin Township, McLean County, Illinois (9). He was a retired farmer (9). He was living with his wife Maggie (9).

He died on 11 March 1922 (5). He is buried in Colfax, Illinois (5).

On 6 April 1922, his widow, Margaret A Stauffer, applied unsuccessfully from Illinois [?] for a pension (4, 12).

In 1930, his widow, Margret A Stauffer, was living in Colfax Village, Martin Township, McLean County, Illinois (10).

SARAH ANN KILGORE STAUFFER, daughter of Malona (Beach) Kilgore and granddaughter of Uri Beach, was born, April 26, 1845, and died, October 9, 1893. She married, December 14, 1869, Samuel Renner Stauffer, at West Jefferson, Ohio, and moved to Colfax, Illinois. He was born in Pennsylvania, November 20, 1845.

Samuel R. Stauffer was a member of Company K, 91st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War, and was a native of Pennsylvania. He died, March 11, 1922, and both he and his wife are buried at Colfax, Illinois.
