After the murder of her father, two uncles, nephew and two other distant kin and neighbors on 6 Aug 1863, Elizabeth (Cave) Bennett left that place of heart-break and sorrow, along with the other families of these fallen men. Her husband, who had retreated to Ohio to avoid the service of one side or the other, sent his brother-in-law to rescue his wife and children after the proclamation of Order #11. It being unsafe and fool-hardy for him to continue to Lone Jack, Missouri he was convinced to wait for her to come to him in Lexington, Missouri;
Upon the exodus of these families, they encountered a neighbor, Jacob Yankee, who was returning to this forbidden area to retrieve his wife and niece; It being unsafe for a man to travel alone in this area, he implored Elizabeth to return with him on this dangerous venture; After the unimaginable tragedy she had just suffered herself, she found it in her heart to return with Jacob Yankee to help retrieve his own family.
Joanne Chiles Eaken tells of this in her book, "Order Number 11"In an article written by Larry Sullivan; he states that after Elizabeth joined her husband in Ohio, they spent the remainder of their time in exile in Wisconsin. They then would have returned to Lone Jack Missouri by Sept 1864, this being the date of their daughter Ella's birth in Lone Jack.
