Northampton County Senior Judge Alfred T. Williams Jr. died Monday at age 70.
Members of the legal community on Monday described their colleague as compassionate, skilled and funny.
"I'm completely discombobulated," said fellow Senior Judge Richard D. Grifo, 82.
"I worked with Judge Williams for 32 years and have known him even longer. The legal community lost a great humanitarian. I have lost a good friend," Grifo added.
Easton attorney Brian Monahan appeared before Williams several times and said he taught young lawyers about the law.
"He was a capable jurist and would take young lawyers under his wing," Monahan said. "He wanted to make sure they understood procedure. He was quite a stickler in that regard."
Palmer Township attorney Karl Kline said Williams could be intimidating behind the bench.
"Not in a mean sense, it was just out of so much respect for Judge Williams," said Kline, 53. "You would stand up there like, "Duh. Duh. Duh.' I know I did my first time in front of him. But he showed you so much respect and that's what I remember most about him."
Federal Judge Franklin Van Antwerpen, 59, said besides teaching him the law for 8 years, Williams had a sense of humor away from the courtroom.
"At a roast back in the mid-1980s, he had [the judges] sing "Oh lord, it's hard to be humble when you are perfect in every way,"' Van Antwerpen said. "That was one of the most memorable days I ever had. He will be sorely missed."
Williams, of Bethlehem, started his legal career in the Lehigh Valley, joining the bar in 1955 after graduating with honors from Moravian College and then the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
He was elected to the bench in December 1967 and became president judge of Northampton County Court in 1978. He held that position for 12 years.
In 1990, Williams announced his retirement because of heart complications, but chose to become a senior judge. On Feb. 1, 1991, he was replaced as president judge by Judge Robert A. Freedberg.
During a career that spanned more than 45 years, Williams served on several boards including Moravian College's and was president of its alumni association.
He also was president of the Lehigh Valley Community Council and Bethlehem Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Williams was honored as Bethlehem's Outstanding Young Man in 1961; named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America a year later; and received the Moravian College Alumni Medallion of Merit Award in 1966.
"Judge Williams was a superb trial judge who was always in charge of the courtroom," said Freedberg, who still serves as president judge. "He ran the courtroom firmly and fairly. Our judges mourn the loss of our teacher and friend."
Services for Williams had not been announced late Monday.

The Northampton County Court of Common Pleas lost a distinguished member on Monday with the death of Senior Judge Alfred T. Williams Jr. Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley also lost one of their finest public citizens.
Judge Williams, who served on the bench for 23 years, including 12 years as president judge, died at age 70. Heart disease had forced him to retire as a commissioned judge in 1990, but for the last 11 years he balanced a fight for his health with continued service to the courts. In fact, he continued working until last week.
As president judge, he cared about the quality of justice in Northampton County. He was among those struggling years ago to deal with overcrowding in the county prison. He put energy and leadership into the particular needs and demands of the juvenile court system. Everything he did in shaping the courts was designed to meet a true democratic goal: to make justice available to everyone and fair for everyone.
It is a system that has changed a great deal since 1967, when Judge Williams, a native of Bethlehem and a graduate of Moravian College, joined the bench. Back then, he was one of only three judges, joining William G. Barthold and Clinton Budd Palmer. Today, there are seven judges, with Judge Williams and two other retired county jurists serving as senior judges. Judge Williams once observed that even with the extra hands, it is a hard-working court, with judges spending far more time on the bench than they did when he started.
When Judge Williams retired, Lehigh County's Judge John E. Backenstoe said his career met an important test -- "The system is better because of your involvement." And Allentown's Judge Donald E. Wieand, that last Lehigh County jurist to serve on Pennsylvania's Superior Court, said he'd heard Judge Williams described as a pillar of the community. "But a pillar just holds things up. I prefer to think of him as a mover and shaker who gets things done."
That certainly applied to Judge Williams's involvement in the community. Moravian College, arts organizations, the Boy Scouts and the Lehigh Valley Community Council are just a few that have benefited from his leadership.
Eloquent and humble on the bench, generous with his time and energy in the community -- Alfred T. Williams Jr. will be missed.
