Notes: |
-
Caladonia's husband,
Joseph R. TAYLOR, was a builder/contractor known for building
the best homes in Cleveland/Bradley counties TN. -
Per the 1850 census below, her first or middle name may have been
"Martha". Further proof of this comes from her daughter Annie
Lyda's death certificate.
-
From Joseph's biography published in the 1887 Goodspeed's History of Bradley County Tennessee:
Joseph R. Taylor apprenticed as a brick mason, then became well known in southeast Tennessee as builder and contractor of some of that region's finest schools and residences. Joseph also served as a Provost Marshall just as the Civil War began.
Joseph was a lieutenant with the 62nd Tennessee Confederate infantry during the Civil War and was captured at the siege of Vicksburg. While being held for one year in prison at Camp Chase, Ohio, he wrote a letter to his wife Caladonia telling her that he had had "a nice breakfast of slick-tailed squirrels and sold some [ I ] did not want for five cents each."
-
Per Robert L.
Taylor's death certificate, he was a physician, and it verifies his parents as J. R. Taylor and Caledonia Straley. (the gravestone birth
year is 1869)
-
Per Annie L (Taylor)
Shultz's death certificate, it lists her mother as "Martha C. Straley", proof that Caladonia's first name was Martha.
-
John W. Taylor is listed as living with Katie's mother and sisters in 1900. -
When the war was over, Joseph walked the 500 miles home to Bradley County, Tennessee, where he and Caladonia lived in Cleveland, TN. They had seven children (five sons & one daughter).

Notes: |
-
Jacob L Straley was a Southern Methodist minister ("one of the first who
preached to the Indians") and his ministerial duties took him and his family to Burnesville, Yancey County,
NC, where they lived for approximately 3 years. They then moved to
TN about 1850.
-
Eliza's last name
may have been "BARGIN". -
Jacob and Eliza are
buried at Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, Bradley County, TN.
There is a picture of Jacob's tombstone on
Find-A-Grave. He is indicated as "Dr. Jacob L. Straley", so I am
guessing he was a physician, but could he have been a professor? -
Caladonia's husband,
Joseph TAYLOR, was a builder/contractor known for building the best homes in Cleveland/Bradley
County, TN. -
