  • William went by "Madison".  He was a farmer and named after his mother's uncle William Madison FRENCH.

  • James O. STRALEY was apparently a minister or Justice of the Peace around 1884 in Giles Co. VA as he is noted in marriage records.

  • When William married Virginia Jesse, he was 62 and she was 24. They were married at the home of James and Mahala THORN. They had no children.

  • William went by "Hampton".

  • Talitha and Hampton lived at Camping Hollow (on Straley Farm).

  • Hampton was the 1872 Accessor of Walker's Creek Township.

  • Talitha's cousin, Martha Ann Virginia STRALEY, apparently lived with them for six years (1850-1856). This is verified by the 1850 Census. They hosted Martha's wedding to cousin Jefferson Lee STRALEY in 1856 at Camping Hollow (note that Martha and Jefferson were first cousins and both illegitimate).

  • George C. STAFFORD was a Justice of the Peace in 1860 Giles Co. VA. His parents were James J. S. STAFFORD and Margaret WAGGONER. After Almeda, George married Luvenia KNODE, and they had two more children, May Stafford and Kemper B. Stafford.

  • John H. Williams served in the 36th Virginia Infantry/Company H during the Civil War.

  • Almeda is buried in Williams Cemetery, Egglestown, VA.

  • Harvey's occupation as listed on his death certificate was "Plaster".

  • On Mary E. Thorn's death certificate, her spouse is listed as W. J. Penturff 4.  Mary and W. J. Penturff lived in North Dakota for a period of time. They are shown on the 1900 US Census for Odessa, Ramsey County, ND as "boarders" living with John Kirk (born in Virginia) and his family. W. J.'s occupation was Blacksmith.

Notes:
  • James Jacob served in the War of 1812 in the 86th Regiment under Capt. Andrew JOHNSTON & Lt. Col. C. SNIDOW. The 87-acre land grant he received in 1816 on the west side of New River (near Wallow Hole) was probably for this military service.

  • Tax records show that James Jacob bought 100 acres in 1808 (from John WHITE) at Camping Hollow in Giles County, VA. .

  • In 1827, James Jacob's uncle Andrew STRALEY came to live with him and his family due to old age (per recorded wills). The Giles County, VA 1840 Census of Pensioners lists Andrew (age 80 or 88), still living with James, which he continued to do until his death in 1841.

  • Betsy Vaught's father, Christian VAUGHT Jr., (b. 1750 in Somerset, NJ) and Andrew VAUGHT are listed among Giles Co., VA fighters in the Colonial Revolutionary War. Her mother, Nancy Sarver, was born c. 1754 in Hagarstown, MD 2.
