James and Griselda (HANDLEY) FOSTER

James and Griselda (Handley) FOSTER's Biography
James FOSTER was born 28 March 1770 in Southhampton, Long Island, NY (or in Northumberland Co VA?) to Isaac and Sarah (HUGHES) FOSTER (see top chart).

".. James FOSTER, was a native of Virginia, but emigrated in early life to Butler County, Ohio, and was numbered among the successful early settlers. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 under Gen. Wayne, was a devoted admirer of the noted warrior, and died in Butler County, an honored and respected old citizen." Source: "A Portrait and Biographical Record of Hendricks County"

Griselda Handley Foster was one of the daughters of Archibald and Jean (Henderson) HANDLEY of Monroe/Greenbrier Co WV, born about 1776 when that area was still part of Virginia. Soon after her father's death in 1796 and just before James turned 27, Griselda married James Foster on March 25, 1797 in Monroe Co, VA.

Notes

Joshua and Aletha's grandson R. J.'s biography described Joshua FOSTER:
"Joshua Foster, son of above and father of Reuben J. Foster, the subject of this sketch, was born in Virginia. From his youth up he was engaged in farming, and was captain of the old muster company. He married Aletha Johnson, of Butler County, Ohio, but they immediately moved to Decatur County, Ind., and settled on new land, improving it and finally making a choice farm of 200 acres, residing there till their deaths. He was a local Democrat of note and took a leading part in politics. The father was inclined toward the Baptist faith, while the mother was a member of the Methodist Church. He died in 1845 and she died in April, 1858."
From Reuben J FOSTER's obit about Joshua and Altha:
"(Reuben J.) was the son of Joshua and Altha Foster, was born in Butler County, Ohio, March 22, 1837. His parents were natives of Virginia. They came to Indiana in 1837 and were among the early settlers of Decatur County. Of a family of nine children born to them, only two now survive. The name of those now living are Nancy C. and Joshua."

Joshua FOSTER was a Baptist. Alletha FOSTER was a Methodist. The Biography of Reuben J. FOSTER lists Joshua and Aletha (JOHNSON) FOSTER the parents of 3 children:

1 * Joshua George FOSTER was born in Jan 1834 and died 21 Dec 1911. He married Clarissa E. ROGERS (1832-1877). They had two children:
Delilah Jane FOSTER O'RILEY (1858-1939)
Richard B. FOSTER (1863-1947)
2 * Reuben J. FOSTER b 22 Mar 1836 Butler Co OH (or 1837 Decatur Co IN), who married Margaret GENTRY, daughter of Martin & Elizabeth GENTRY (b 16 Jan 1842, d 1933) of Hendricks Co IN. R. J. moved to Hendricks Co IN in 1858. R. J. died 26 Aug 1901, buried at North Salem Cemetery.
They had 6 children listed in FindAGrave.com:
Sarah J. (1859-1891)
Isaac W. (1861-1936)
Pleasant "David" (1863-1941)
Edgar T. (1866-1951)
Iva M. (FOSTER) THARP (1882-1969)
Harry Johnson (1885-1967)
But R. J.'s biography says there were 9 children with 2 surviving by 1901 (Nancy C. and Joshua).
3 * Aletia Ann FOSTER GENTRY, b 11 Jul 1841 d 31 Jul 1872 (31) married William H. H. GENTRY. They had 3 children:
Martin Orland
Nancy E. (GENTRY) FIGHTMASTER
Harry L. GENTRY.

Ancestry lists 5 children of Joshua and Aletha (JOHNSON) FOSTER:
Sarah Jane FOSTER 1828-? (Mrs. Adam FISHER)
Fannie FOSTER 1830-1863 (Mrs. William M. GOULD)
* Aletha Ann FOSTER 1841-1871 (Mrs. William H. GENTRY)
* Reuben Johnson FOSTER 1841-1933 (married Margaret Elizabeth GENTRY)

Check: Altha FOSTER, b 1812 VA and residing in Shelby twp, Jefferson Co IN for the 1860 census with James Foster, William Foster, Joseph Foster

Death of Isaac Foster
Isaac Foster, the oldest member of the G. A. R. of Indiana, died at his home in Indianapolis Wednesday, April 11 (1888). Grandfather Foster, as he was familiarly called, was born in Monroe county, West Virginia, in 1802. He was married to Sarah Ann Jones, of Butler county, Ohio, Feb. 10, 1831. Twelve children were born to them, seven of whom with their mother survive him.

Early in 1861, at the age of 57 years, he enlisted in the 71st Ohio Vol, Inf. and with the army of the Tennessee participaged in several noted battles among which was the fight at Pittsburg Landing. But the long weary march and fearful exposure proved to [sic] much for a man of his age, and despite his dauntless courage and grand aptriotism, long before the term of his enlistmet had expired he was compelled to confide to younger and sturdier hands the defense of his country.

For months after his discharge life trembled in the balance, but finally he rallied and lived to enjoy the blessings of a free and united country nearly a quarter of a century.

In disposition he was gentle as a woman and his sunset of life was beautiful as the close of a perfect day. He was a member of Joseph R. Gordon Post and his burial was conducted by that body. His funeral was attended by all the Posts of the city. The remains were interred at Crown Hill cemetery Sunday, April 15 [1888]. Mr. Foster had a larger circle of friends and relative living in this county. (Isaac Foster's obituary)
