He was the son of George and Elizabeth (Cranshaw) Stewart. George was one of the earliest settlers in the area that was to become Lawrence County. As Lawrence County was carved from Scioto County in late 1816, it is likely that John was born in the Symmes Township area. John married Sarah Lavisa "Sallie" McCartney on March 16, 1820 in Lawrence County. She was born on January 18, 1802, and was the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Price) McCartney. John was a farmer. Among other things, he raised corn, apples, potatoes, cabbages, pumpkins, grapes, and peaches. Additionally, he had cattle, sheep, and pigs. He won a number of prizes for his cows at the county fairs. John eventually owned considerable land. It was on his property that two of his children were buried on a hill on his farm near Sherritts in the mid 1800's. Those burials are believed to have been the beginning of what is now commonly referred to as the Stewart Cemetery. Eleven of his sixteen children, as well as a great number of his descendants, are buried in that cemetery. John and Sarah were members of the Palestine Baptist Church. John also served as the County Commissioner for two terms.
