Notes

pages 10 through 12 of the original manuscript: "Elisha and wife, Milly (Mildred Stratton) Hurt conveyed 101 acres of land in Bedford County, Va. to Stephen Goggins by deed dated 11-23-1778. (Deed Book 6, page 157, Bedford County, Va.).
Elisha Hurt was a son of Moses Hurt and wife, Ruth Turner Hurt. He was born in the first part of 1750s. I do not know whether he was born in Bedford County or Caroline County for his parents moved from Caroline County to Bedford County about the time that Elisha was probably born. He died in Bedford County in the first part of 1810. He married Mildred Stratton before 11-23-1778 (See above mentioned deed of that date). He called his wife "Milley". They had 12 children, according to the legatees given in his estate records and her will dated 6-13-1818, probated 7-27-1835 and recorded in Bedford County in Will Book 9, page 57, and from the marriage records of Bedford County. Their children were as follows, but not in order of their births:
(1) John Hurt.
(2) Joel L. Hurt, born 1801 and died 2-25-1881. Married Nancy Whitely in Bedford County by bond dated 2-13-1830.
(3) Elisha Hurt, Jr. He married Elizabeth Squires in Bedford County by bond dated 10-17-1810. They moved to Maury County, Tn.
(4) Moses Hurt, wife was Polly Hurt.
(5) Henry Hurt, married Rhoda Wright in Bedford County by bond dated 12-24-179?.
(6) Bird Hurt, wife was Susan Hurt. Moved to Maury County, Tn.
(7) William Hurt. I think he was the William Hurt who married Mary Rucker in Bedford County by bond dated 12-24-1810.
(8) Sally Hurt, she married Isaac Preston in Bedford County by bond dated 9-22-1800.
(9) Jane Hurt, she married Alex Smith in Bedford County by bond dated 11-17-1810.
(10) Milley Hurt, she married Lewis Turner in Bedford County by bond dated 12-23-1805.
(11) Jenny Hurt.
(12) Polly Hurt, she married William Stratton in Bedford County by bond dated 3-28-1808.

WOOD, SOLOMON JEFFERSON RAIFORD 1799 71

from Sam Wood, Oct 29, 1999: "Solomon's will was filed in Jefferson Co., GA 27 Nov1805. In it he mentions his wife Elizabeth, daughters, Elizabeth, Nancy and Polly, sons, Green Wood, Mark Red Wood and John White Wood. General Solomon Wood died in 1815 and was buried on his farm in Jefferson Co, GA. Mark Red and John Whit died young without issue. Green, his mother and I believe 2 of the daughters moved to AL (in 188). Green and his family moved to TX in 1850."

From Woody Rice, [email protected] Oct 17, 1999 "re Wood, Hillsboro and Paris, TX:
I have a letter written by Mathew S. Wood, County Judge in Hillsboro till Dec 1934, which includes a lot of his family history. I also have a large amount of documentation on the Wood family from their migration from GA to East Texas, but I am still trying to sort it out. Your ancestors could very well be in all this material. I am a gggs of Mathew Wood and Morning Atkinson who came to Tyler circa 1859. Their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Sallie) married my ggf just after the Civil War. The father of Judge Wood was one of Sallie's siblings. Judge Wood says in his letter that we are descendents of Gen. Solomon Wood, who served as a Captain under G. Washington in the Revolution. Solomon has also been in one of the Virginia Masonic lodges with Washington. He was subsequently appointed a Major General by the Gov of GA and spent many years supervising the GA self defense forces."
