Before the war

In 1850, he was living in St Clair, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Jacob and May Barclay (presumably his parents), along with nine others (presumably siblings). [source: 14]

In 1860, he was living in St Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was a shoemaker. [source: 9]

When he enlisted, he was a shoemaker. [source: 3, 4]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. [sources: 3, 4]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864. He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district. He was a private in company B. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 6 (4 Oct), 19, 20, 21]

He was present on the regiment's march from Burksville Station to Daily's Crossroads, in April 1865. [source: 12]

He was discharged at Washington, D.C., by general order 94, War Department, on 30 May 1865 (1) or 25 May 1865. He was a private, in company B. [sources: 2, 6 (6 July), 19, 20, 21]

After the war

He married Susan Beegle. She was born in April 1844, in Pennsylvania. They had four children, two of whom were alive in 1900:

In 1870, he was living in Freedom Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Susan and children Ella, Jennie, and Annie. He was a s[h]oemaker. [source: 15]

On 20 [?] March 1879, he successfully applied for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]

In 1880, he was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sue, and children Ellen, Jennie, Annie, and William, along with a nephew. He was a laborer. [source: 16]

On 11 December 1886, he made an affidavit supporting the pension application of Maria E widow of Martin Imler. He was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [source: 12]

In 1890, he was living in Imler Valley, King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He had lost an eye while in the service. [source: 6]

He died on 10 November 1897. He was buried at the Lutheran Church near St Clairsville, in East St Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 5, 7, 13]

On 3 May 1898, his widow, Susan Barkley, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]

In 1900, his widow Susan was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She was living with a grandson [?]. She reported having had four children, two of whom were alive. [source: 10]

In 1910, she was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She was living alone. [source: 11]

In 1920, his widow, Sue Barclay, was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [source: 17]
