Name

Some records report his name as John Toland (3, 4).

Before the war

He was born in 1833/34 (8 (27 in 1861), 9 (29 in 1863), 11 (29 in 1863)). He was born in Ireland (11).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 9, 11).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (8, 9, 11).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 19 October 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 7, 8). He was enlisted for three years, by Captain Bowman (7). He was a private in company B (1, 15-16).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (12).

On 15 August 1863, he was detailed for duty in the Pioneer Corps (2).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 8, 9 [25 Dec], 11 [25 Dec]). He was enlisted for three years by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered by Lieutenant Swan (9, 11).

He was detailed by Colonel Gregory on 4 July 1864 for duty in the pioneer corps at brigade headquarters (3, 4, 6, 14 [3 May]). He was still there in September [?] 1864 (6).

On 17 March 1865, he was detailed for duty in the 3rd brigade pioneer corps (5, 13).

He may have been charged for lost equipments, perhaps when the regiment mustered out (but the ditto marks for "equipments" are crossed out) (10).

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 8). He was a private, in company B (15-16).

[Two facts confirm this identification. First, the only John Toland in Bates was in company K, and was discharged in 1862. Second, the list of detailed men from September 1864 has Anthony Toland detailed on 4 July 1864 as a Pioneer at Brigade Headquarters.]
