He was born on 5 May 1830, in Huntington Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, to John Weigle and Mary Magdalena Schriver. In 1850, he was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was living with John and Maria Weigle (presumably his parents), along with nine other Weigle's (presumably his siblings). [source: 11]

In 1856/57, he married Anna Mary Means. She was born on 19 December 1835, in Pennsylvania.

During the war

He was drafted. He was mustered into service as a private on 28 February 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company F. [sources: 1, 2, 12, 18, 20-21]

On the May/June 1865 muster roll, he was reported as a nurse at the Division Hospital. [source: 18]

After the war

On 18 October 1865, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 3, 4]

In 1870, he was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer, and owned $3,500 in real estate, and $1,000 in personal property. He was living with his wife Anna, and children Clayton, Harvey, and William. [source: 7]

In 1880, he was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary A, and children Clayton, Samuel H, and William G. He was a farmer. [source: 8]

In 1890, he was living in Menallen Township or Bendersville Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania. [source: 5]

In 1900, he was living in Bendersville Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer. He was living with his wife Anna M, and son William G. [source: 9]

On 19 May 1906, he died, in Bendersville, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He died of cancer of intestine (2 years duration). He was a retired farmer. On 21 May 1906, he was buried in Haven of Rest Cemetery, Bendersville Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania. On 29 May 1906, his widow, Anna M Weigle, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. The certificate was dated 6 November 1906. [sources: 3, 4]

In 1910, his widow, A Mary Weigle, was living in Bendersville Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania. She was living with a servant. [source: 10]

Note on identification

The index to the compiled service records clearly separates him from the Henry Weigle who served in company B. I believe I have correctly identified this Henry Weigle, based in part on the 1890 veterans schedule transcribed below and the widow's name in the pension index by name (entry 4 below). (See the note on identification about the other Henry Weigle for more details.) But the similarity leaves me less confident than I would like to be.
