Colonel Edward Jackson was born on 1 March 1759 at
Moorefield, Hampshire Co., Virginia. He was the son of
John Jackson and
Elizabeth Cummins. Colonel Edward Jackson began military service. He married
Mary Haddan on 13 October 1783. Colonel Edward Jackson married
Elizabeth Weatherholt Brake, daughter of
John Brake and
Elizabeth Weatherholt, on 13 October 1799 at
Harrison Co., Virginia. Colonel Edward Jackson died on 25 December 1828 at
Jackson's Mill, Lewis Co., Virginia, at age 69. He was buried in December 1828 at
Jackson Cemetery, Jackson's Mill, Lewis Co., West Virginia; Steve Corley discovered that Col. Edward Jackson's grave did not have a tombstone, and led an effort to have a white marble tombstone installed at the grave. The tombstone was ordered in January 2003 and should be in place my Memorial Day, 2003. It will be inscribed as follows:
"Edward Jackson
VA Militia
Revolutionary
War
Colonel
Randolph Co
Militia
March 1 1759
December 25 1828"
*The boys at Randolph Memorial Company near Elkins, WV. will inscribe the back of the headstone as follows:
"Grandfather of Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson."
Hopefully the stone will arrive by Memorial Day or shortly thereafter. In conjunction with the Jackson Cemetery trustees, the Jane Lew area American Legion/VFW, the Jackson Brigade, Inc., and Dean Hardman of the Extension Service at the Jackson's Mill Conference Center, I am planning a community event honoring the Col. The ceremony will include full military gravesite rites. Renowned artist, craftsman, and Stonewall Jackson portrayer Stephen Cassle will be on hand to "represent" Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson with uniform, beard, and all. A small reception will follow either at the Mill or possibly at the Legion Hall in Jane Lew.
