While searching for my own family I have been given a good deal of information about other Borthwicks, not connected to mine. As well I have collected a great deal of data in the course of my research. The information on these pages is both from my own research and from a number of very generous genealogists on the Rootsweb Mailing Lists 2000-2001. Other contributors have contacted me as a result of these web pages. Thank you to all who have shared their data so willingly.

My own particular research interest is in the ancestry and descendants of John Borthwick & Elizabeth Dinwoodie who were married in Scotland in 1781. That research has led me to register a One Name Study for the name Borthwick and thence to this collection of a large amount of data that I hope will be of assistance to other Borthwick researchers. Please get in touch with me if you have something you'd like to post on these pages for the same reasons.

Some of the information on this page has not been finally formatted. I am posting it "as is" in order to quickly make it available to researchers and will improve the formatting etc when time permits.

For further information about Borthwicks in Scotland there are some separate pages. I am adding data as quickly as I can but not all pages listed below are completed at this stage. Follow the links to pages for:

As well there is information about Borthwicks in Scotland (my own and other families) scattered on various pages throughout my site. Please try the "Find" facility or look on the "What's New" pages if you are seeking some specific information. You may also email me & I'll do what I can to help.

And finally, there are also pages on this site for Borthwicks in Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. I will add more as I gather information. The next one on the drawing board at the moment is Borthwicks in India.

Early Borthwicks in Scotland

On other pages of this site there are many references to early Borthwicks in various parts of Scotland. On the Notable Borthwicks page I've placed information about the Lords Borthwick and their families, as well as many other Borthwicks referred to in historical documents.

In this section of this page I will list early Borthwicks whose exact location in Scotland I am uncertain about.

The National Library of Scotland Scottish Book Trade Index represents an index of printers, publishers, booksellers, bookbinders, printmakers, stationers and papermakers based in Scotland, from the beginnings of Scottish printing to ca. 1850. Drawn from a variety of sources (see the list of references), this index is very much a work in progress, and is constantly being updated. Comments and suggestions for additions are always welcome - see the introduction for further details.

  • BORTHWICK, William Murray printer and publisher Lanark, Hamilton and Glasgow
    Castlegate 1818-20
Robert Alexander and W.M. Borthwick Clydesdale Journal Office, Hamilton 1819-21
Glasgow Sentinel Nelson Street, Glasgow 1821-22

Published a cheap magazine called The Clydesdale Magazine. On its failure he projected in February 1820, The Clydesdale Journal a loyal weekly paper. He advertised in a Glasgow paper for an editor who could advance 300 and Robert Alexander applied. He went to Hamilton early in July 1820, but withdrew when he discovered the real circumstaces. However he was persuaded to take the editorship on the understanding that the paper should be removed to Glasgow. The last number of the Clydesdale Journal appeared on 28 September 1821. In 1821 the printing materials were sequestered at the instance of Borthwicks creditors and bought in by Alexander who thereafter published the Glasgow Sentinel. In March 1822 Borthwick was imprisoned for a debt of 50, and while in prison was approached by Mr William Spalding SSC as agent for some of the individuals who had been libelled by the Sentinel and whom Borthwick had approached with apologies. After consultation with his clients, Spalding paid the 50 and released Borthwick who broke into the offices of The Sentinel and took away a large part of the papers of the newspaper, and handed them over to Spalding who took them to Edinburgh. Borthwick was apprehended and indicted for trial at Glasgow in April 1822, but proceedings were ultimately dropped. The fatal duel between James Stuart of Dunearn and Sir Alexander Boswell Bart of Auchinleck was an indirect result of this business.

Glasgow: printed in the Sentinel Office, 1822; William Borthwick. Proceedings against Wm. Murray Borthwick, at the instance of His Majestys Advocate, and of Robert Alexander, styling himself editor and proprietor of the Glasgow Sentinel newspaper. Writers to the Signet

Borthwicks included in the History of the Society of Writers to his Majesty's Signet (thank you Andrew Forman) are:

  • Francis John Gordon BORTHWICK (10.7.1893)
  • James BORTHWICK (before 1598) and
  • Louis BORTHWICK (28.2.1828) Apprentice to William Bell. Third son of John Borthwick of Crookston, Mid-Lothian. Born 1801. Married 19.7.1844, Susan (died 15.1.1859), third daughter of John Westgarth, Surveyor of Customs. Died 22.9.1876.

There is apparently a distinction between "Writer" and "Writer to the Signet" (WS).

Next we have a brave Borthwick in Berwickshire. ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY BRONZE MEDALS TAKEN FROM THE RHS ANNUAL REPORT 1913 Compiled by Bill Fevyer http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tamarnet/bronz13s.htm Borthwick, Alexander, a non swimmer Case 40110 At 5 p.m. on the 7th July, 1913, Richd. Purdy fell into Eyemouth Harbour, the depth being 12 feet. Alexander Borthwick, who cannot swim, jumped in and held him till they were pulled out. Which Alexander Borthwick was this? Does any reader know?

Eyemouth, Berwickshire

Throughout this site there are numerous references to Borthwicks of Eyemouth. They seem to have been fishermen and lived in the area for many generations. It is said that they are descended from David Borthwick and Elizabeth Johnstone.

Borthwick Park: According to Halsey Borthwick, in the Parish of Eyemouth there is a remarkable wall called Borthwick Park, built of moor stone which breaks into large flat pieces. There is no cement and no covering but when Halsey wrote in 1902 had stood for 190 years. "Though it is low, yet, in consequence of its extreme uneveness and ruggedness, neither horses nor cattle ever attempted to go over it." Source: Clamers caledonia, Volume 4. Is this wall still there? And why was it named Borthwick Park?

I have been in touch with a number of descendants of David Borthwick and Elizabeth Johnstone and would love to hear from any other members of this family. It would be especially excellent to hear from anyone who has been able to trace back beyond David and Elizabeth, who were married in Coldingham in 1786.

East Lothian

Here are some Borthwick odds and ends found by Jill Clarke while researching in East Lothian in early 2001. Thank you Jill.

A George Borthwick is buried at North Berwick along with wife Isabella Jackson. He was 74 when he died 21 Dec. 1914. (They had a daughter but the stone was badly leaning and not legible.)

An Andrew Borthwick and wife resided at Greenshead. They are mentioned in the Parish of
