Note | Gillian Blakey, Maurice's grand-daughter has Maurice's Certificate for Gallant Conduct with the 22nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry (Pioneers) dated 21st April 1918. He was cited for bravery in the 2nd Battle of the Somme, when the German offensive broke through the British lines, the DLI were one of many battalions thrown in to hold them back. DLI records traced his commission as 2nd Lieutenant on 27th November 1915, his promotion to Lieutenant on 29th May 1916 and to Captain on 27th March 1918. He relinquished his rank on 3rd January 1920.
Note | After the war he worked for a Shipping Brokers in Redcar. Per grand daughter Gillian Blakey
Note | Grand daughter Gillian Blakey: "Maurice was convicted of fraud and sent to Wakefield prison. My mother and his family always maintained that he had taken the rap for his partner's wrongdoings. Nevertheless, when he was released from prison my grandmother's family who were very respectable were determined that she should have nothing to do with him. I believe some of the lost money had belonged or been invested by them. Someone did suggest to me that he stole the money to keep granny in the manner to which she had become accustomed as she had a wealthy upbringing by her grandparents. I knew my granny well though and find this upsetting as she was such a lovely generous person. When Maurice decided to go to Canada, funded by his Masonic Lodge, my grandmother was persuaded to stay in England by her aunts with the promise that they would support her and my mother. Granny only met him once more with a chaperone and opted to stay in England (she was by nature a timid woman and was maybe too scared to emigrate). She nursed her wealthy aunts through ill health and they left her their money which supported her comfortably all her life. She never worked. Maurice went to Canada and wrote many letters home begging her to join him and asking to see his daughter. I know this because I can remember my mum destroying them after granny's death. Eventually he gave up and remarried, without taking the trouble to get a divorce."
Note | The London Gazette dated 2 Feb 1926 (Pg 825) records that the partnership between Maurice Elliff and John Grant Peckston, trading as Maurice Elliff & Co was dissolved by mutual consent on 28 Jan 1926
Note | From the North Eastern Daily Gazette Thursday 6th May 1926: Ship Brokers Sentence Pleading guilty before Mr Justice Wright at Leeds Assizes yesterday, to a charge of fraudulent conversion, Maurice Elliff, shipbroker of Middlesbrough was sentenced to six months imprisonment in the second division. Note | It is assumed that Maurice attended Featherstone Road School in Southall between 1930 and 1935; this was the nearest school to his home in Brent Road. No registers exist for the school, but a photograph of Maurice as a schoolboy shows him wearing a cap with a badge with feathers.
Note | Whilst serving with the Queen's Regiment 169 Brigade, Maurice took part in the Spring 1945 Offensive in Italy known as the River Po Campaign16,17
Note | The Probate Registry Indexes record that Maurice's mother Lily's will was proved on 12 Mar 1963 in London and he was granted probate. Her effects were valued at £413 11s 2d
Note | The Probate Registry Indexes record that Maurice's father John's will was proved on 15 Mar 1966 in London and probate granted to Maurice and his brother Alfred. Effects were valued at £4,941
Note | Maurice was a member of Kensington Lodge No. 1767 of the Freemasons from 1961 to 1969. Lodge Agendas
Note | Maurice's death certificate recorded his cause of death as carcinoma of head of pancreas
Note | Following Maurice's death, a newly discovered plant "Elaeocarpus elliffii" was named by the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew in his honour. A framed picture of the plant (now in his son Martin's possession) presented to his wife Kitty has the following text written on the back: "His cheerful, kindly presence is sadly missed by all the Herbarium staff, not just by his messengerial colleagues, as is his sage advice on practical matters such as plumbing and decorating" |

His coolness, presence of mind, and expert pilotage, have ensured the success of all his missions and the safety of his crew and aircraft. Death | c Jun 1975 | Doncaster Registration District, Yorkshire5 |
Note | "Reginald Elliff worked as a teaboy on the railways until his mother encouraged him to turn his hobby of photography into a business. A shop on Balby Road followed early with a small studio on Urban Road. At Balby Road, Mr Elliff realised his ambition to concentrate on processing pictures taken by other people. In pursuit of profits, he developed a national cine hire business renting out films of Charlie Chaplin and the latest movies for home use. There was even a tiny cinema complete with tip up seats above the shop. There was little studio photography except during the war years when Mr Elliff's wife kept the business going, taking photographs to send to servicemen separated from their families. Reginald Elliff was largely an entrepreneur and after returning from the army rapidly increased the photoprocessing business following the example of E. L. Scrivens, another Doncaster photographer. Mr Elliff finally moved to premises in Denaby in the 1960s. He has now retired." Written by his son Kenneth in a magazine article accompanying a letter dated Dec 2008
Note | "The GNR Teaboys, pictured here, stood on Doncaster Railway Station selling refreshments when the trains stopped, as buffet cars did not exist during the 1920s." Note | Rhodes was baptised along with his siblings Joseph, William Edward, Betsey and Hannah Eve at Kirk Leavington, Yorkshire on 9 May 1858 (Parish Register seen by PC Elliff at Middlesbro RO on m/f). He is recorded as 'Rose' 'son of'. The IGI also records the name as 'Rose' and also 'F/C' (female child). The GRO index entry for his birth is also 'Rose'.
Note | Also living with Rhodes & his family on the day of the 1891 census was TGS Bennison (?), single, aged 25, Commercial Traveller, born in Berwick on Tweed. His relation to the head of the family is given as 'adopted'? Also in the household was Jane Ramsale, single, aged 12, born in Yarm, Servant Domestic.
Note | Rhodes was nominated as a Yarm parish councillor on Monday 10 Mar 1896. Northern Echo (Darlington) 11 Mar 1896
Note | Rhodes was mentioned in his mother's will proved in May 1904; he was bequeathed her trade utensils from her grocery business as well as £200. He was also to receive a tenth part of the residue of the estate after specific bequeaths had been made.
Note | His brother John bequeathed £50 each to his niece Mabel Roper and nephew William Rhodes Elliff from his will proved in Mar 1921
Note | When Rhodes died in June 1904, the burial entry in the Yarm parish register (seen on m/f at Middlesbrough RO by PC Elliff) recorded that he was churchwarden. The Yarm Parish Magazine of July 1904 carried the following: 'We regret exceedingly having to record the loss of our valued Churchwarden, Mr. Rhodes Elliff, who was called away after a very short illness, and at a time when his life appeared to be most necessary to his family. He had only held office for two months, but had shewn a great deal of interest in his work, and would have been a valuable helper to the church had it been otherwise ordered. He was ever a true and kindly friend, and his genial presence will long be missed here. His son may rest assured of the sympathy and good will of all his neighbours, in the heavy responsibility which has thus suddenly been thrown upon him.'
Note | Rhodes was buried on 16 Jun 1904 at Yarm Parish Cemetery, situation A1 D, grave number 3. The gravestone (see letter from Mr. P. Bilbrough dated 6/2/89) reads: 'In loving memory of Hannah Elliff who died Apr 24th 1904 aged 86 years. Joseph Elliff son of the above who died Apr 7th 1897 aged 48. Rhodes Elliff son of the above who died Jun 13th 1904 aged 50 years.'
Note | The burial entry in the Yarm parish register (see above) records his age as 52 as does the cemetery record.
Note | Wife Annie was granted letters of administration on 13 Jun 1904; his effects were valued at £1217 6s 10d. |
