Note | Thomas is assumed to be the son of John(O466) and Jane(O465) as he recorded his place of birth as Pinchbeck around 1810 in various census returns. John and Jane are likely parents as they had William(P364) around 1815 and William also recorded his place of birth as Pinchbeck in census returns. John spent most of his life in the Pinchbeck area. However, Thomas and William's births are yet to be found.
Note | Thomas and his family began to record their surname as Ayliff(e) from about 1850, although this may be someone's interpretation of their pronunciation. |

Note | William's date and place of birth are established from census returns for 1851 (HO107 2096), 1861 (RG9 2320) and 1881 (RG11 3200) where age and place are consistently recorded. However, no baptism can be found in Pinchbeck or Spalding for the period 1800 to 1820. That John (O466) is his father is accepted because John's mother was Hannah Black (N540) and John called himself John Black and John Black Elliff at various times; William is also recorded as Black in the Pinchbeck West registers and in one entry as Eliff alias Black. John (O466) was living in the Pinchbeck area from the 1851 census. That Jane (O465) is William's mother is assumed by her being John's (O466) first wife.
Note | In the baptism entries for his first three children by Susan Harker, Benjamin (1867), John Henry (1869) and John Henry (1874), William's surname is recorded as Black, and for that of his daughter Florence Hannah (1879) as Eliff alias Black. Before and after this period he was always recorded as Elliff or Eliff.
Note | In his burial entry, William's age is recorded as 87 years which would make his date of birth c1813. His abode was given as Pinchbeck West. |

Note | Grand Master William Elliff of Spilsby The present Grand Master of the Order, Bro. William Elliff, of Spilsby, Lincolnshire, was born on the 20th June, 1852, at Wainfleet, a small town in the Lincolnshire fens, and received his education there under Mr. George Collins, an excellent, painstaking, and thorough teacher. After conducting himself in a highly satisfactory manner at school, in 1865 he entered on business life in the office of Mr. Merrifield, a solicitor, at Wainfleet, who speedily became much attached to and took pains to instruct his young and only clerk. In less than two years, whilst for a small office several rather important conveyancing and trust businesses were in progress, Mr. Merrifield was incapacitated by paralysis, and thus a large amount of responsibility and labour fell upon our Brother's youthful shoulders. In this difficult situation, under slight supervision, he discharged his duties so efficiently that on the death of Mr. Merrifield, in 1868, he was offered a very good position in the office of Messrs. Thimbleby and Son, Spiisby, where he has remained ever since as managing clerk, enjoying the full confidence and respect not only of the principals, but also of their numerous clients. In politics Bro. Elliff holds the views of the Conservative party and more than ten years ago was largely instrumental in the organisation of that party in his town and neighbourhood, acting as the first honorary secretary of the Spilsby and District Conservative Association, and the Spiisby Conservative Working Men's Club. He has, however, a natural antipathy to narrowness, and has never allowed his opinions to interfere with his private friendships, numbering many of his political opponents among his choicest friends. Besides other offices and appointments he is a Director of the Spilsby Gas Company, and a Governor of the Spilsby Grammar School. He has an important position in the Wesleyan Church of the town where he resides, having held almost every office open to laymen, including that of representative to Conference. For many years he has been superintendent of the Sunday school, and an active temperance worker, being a total abstainer of twenty-three years' standing. In 1870 Bro. EIliff was initiated a member of the Lord Willoughby Lodge of the Grand United Order. He has for a long time been the Treasurer of that lodge, and regularly attends its fortnightly sessions. In the affairs of the Alford District he takes a prominent part, and has passed through the District Master's Chair. Our Brother attended the Pontypridd, Burton-on-Trent, Shrewsbury, and Newcastle General Meetings. From the first the interest which he manifested in the various matters brought forward, and the part which he took in discussion, showed him to be a close observer, keen debater, and courageous advocate of the views respecting the business of the Order. He declined nomination for the Board until the Shrewsbury meeting, when he was elected second on the poll with 104 votes. At Newcastle he headed the poll for the Board, and only failed to secure the post of Deputy Grand Master (for which be had, with others, been duly nominated in the final round of voting by 15 votes. On a vacancy occurring in the Deputy Grand Mastership, he was elected to this office by his fellow Directors at their quarterly meeting in April last, and although he had only occupied that position for such a brief period, the Cardiff A.M.C. endorsed the action of the Directors by unanimously and enthusiastically electing Bro. Elliff to the highest office in the Order. After his installation the Grand Master introduced to the meeting, on his own responsibility, a scheme for establishing on a voluntary basis a fund for the relief of distressed lodges and districts, which was taken up heartily and adopted. It is to be fervently hoped, in the interests of the Order, that the Grand Master will see this fund well launched and placed under rules for careful and judicious administration before he leaves the chair at Bolton, and that it will be the means not only of checking any spirit of secession, but also of consolidating and strengthening the Order throughout the kingdom. The business training which our Grand Master has had from his early youth has eminently fitted him for extensive usefulness in any public position, and we trust that he will be spared for many years to render efficient service to the Grand United Order.
