Susanna LANKSHEAR clarification of the various women at end of 18th century
Until late in 19th century families often used the same forenames frequently for cousins born the same time. Very confusing......
There are four Susanna/Susannah around at the end of the 18th century including the three Susanna Lankshear born 1779 1781 and 1782 - I hope we can clarify which is whom for the sake of their descendants.
The first is easy Mrs Susanna Lankshear lived 1760 yo 1841 and wife of 1778 Robert Lankshear marriage Susanna Shepperd at Witney
One of their daughters was baptised 17th February 1782 - Susanna LANKSHIER daughter of Robert & Susanna
1782 Susanna Lankshear - daughter of ROBERT and
SUSANNAH who married in 1802 Susannah
LANKSHEAR married John Legg CLARE is
mentioned in her mother's wife as wife of John Clare......
The 1779 Susanna is daughter of 1767 Joseph LANKSHEAR marriage Elizabeth SYLVESTER baptised LANKSHEAR Susannah 21 Mar 1779 d Joseph & Elizabeth pr(ivate) in Kencot. The long time assumption by the earlier Lankshear researchers was that it was this Susanna in 1800 Susannah LANKSHIRE marriage William SLATTER 29 Sep 1800 at St Peter in the East Oxford. This seems very likely as she would have been 21 the very usual age to marry whereas the other Susanna's were 18 or 19. Further there is Burial Susan Slater 1835 June 15 which makes her born 1777/78, which indeed would appear to be confirm Mrs Slater was the older girl.
The final Susanna to consider was baptised 1781 15 Jun Susannah LANKSHEAR
d Thomas
& Mary meaning
Thomas
and Mary (Hammersly) Lankshear and children. I believe she is
1808 Susannah LANKSHEAR marriage to
William Bridgman 19-May 1808 OX St Michael Susannah LANKSHEAR married William BRIDGMAN
and their son Frederic
William Lankshear BRIDGMAN baptised CHARLBURY 1809. We can trace Fred in
Witney from 1831 upto death in 1896.
Fred when in Witney in 1841 is shown as a baker and he must have worked with
1835 William Lankshear marriage to
Charlotte Wiggins. William died in 1844 and Fred by 1851 is working with
wool. So the bakery must have been William's so when it was sold or re-leased
Fred needed a new job. Fred and William were first cousins. More on Fred's page
re his links to Wiggins family
but there seems to be nothing else on Mrs Susanna Bridgman. It is possible husband William is around as two William in Crawley and Hailey. More work needed on this........
