Nov. 3, 1631 John Elliot, a christian missionary landed in Boston. The above from a undated newspaper clipping in the Elliott file at the nat'l Genealogical Society in Washington 7-15-1994.

The information on George and his children is from the book, " The Genealogy of the descendants of one George Finley by Capt. Herald F. Stout, Dover, Ohio 1949. This work claims that Aaron Elliott is the second child of George and that Patrick is the 7th child of George. The author then claims that Patrick is the father of my "Blacksmith" George Elliott. I don't think this is possible as Aaron and "Blacksmith George were born within 3 years of each other.

1795-96
Born in Ireland. This date is worked back from his death date and age. His birth place in Ireland is not yet known. George lived near some other Elliotts in Ohio that were related to one Charles Elliott who became a well known Methodist minister. Charled lived in County Donegal near the coastal town of Ardara. The writer visited the reported remains of this house in the 1970's. One other report has George living slightly east of Donegal.
In 1973 Gertrude Croft wrote to AH she recalls a visit from Lincoln & Grace Bechtel Elliott calling on Gertrudes mother. She claims that Lincoln stated that his family came from Dublin and she thinks it was a county that began "Am" or "Arm". County Armagh is the southern most county in what is now 1993 northern Ireland. This county is about 60 miles east from Donegal it is also about 60 miles north of Dublin. Another possiblity is County Antrim which is directly north of Belfast. Lincoln is Robert Lincoln Elliott born XXXXXX. Lincoln is the son of George A. whose father was Robert the son of "Blacksmith George Elliott".
One report in a Finley Family hisory claims that George is the son of a Patrick Elliott. I very much doubt this but have included in the materials having no better name to use. There were a number of Elliott - Finley marriages in Ohio. It was Irish custom to name the first born son after the paternal grandfather, the second son after the maternal grandfather and the third son after the father. This woiuld make George's father Hugh and there is on in Jefferson County, Ohio at the correct time.

1798
Ireland is rocked by a terrible civil war. Estimates are that a total of some 25,000 people died. The war no doubt started with the spirit of the American and French revolutions seeking liberty. Basically you had people who wished independence from England and you had a religious war all wrapped up together. Most of the people in rebellion were Catholic but not all and people died on both sides at the hands of people of the same religion. On January 1, 1801 there was signed a formal union of Ireland with England and this agreement keep Catholics from becoming members of Parliment.

1801
The weather was terrible during the summer and many crops failed and many people emmigrated.
George's G-grandson Albert W. Elliott states in a 1941 letter that the family was originally from the border between England and Scotland. He states that the Elliotts and the Maxwells were buffer clans and after the wars ended this family moved to northern Ireland.
1808
We have one unconfirmed report that George came to the USA in this year. We do not know where he originally lived int he USA. There were several Elliott's in Washington County, Pennsylvania near the small own of Clayville. The first USA location that we can firmly tie George to is Jefferson County, Ohio. In Jefferson County, Ohio as early as Dec. 22, 1807 there is a record of a George Elliott buying lot No. 5 in Springfield for $10.00. Could this be father or uncle to subject???

1812 -1814
George participated in the War of 1812. One report from his g-grandson Albert W. Elliott has him serving as a sargent in the 32nd Regiment and being present at the balle of Thames.

March 28, 1820
Married Prudence Henderson in Jefferson County, Ohio. Prudence was also born about 1792-3 in Ireland and she was the daughter of Robert Henderson. Andrew Elliott, J.P. married George & Prudence. On this same day Andrew Elliott married George Henderson and Jane Finley. Possibly George and & Prudence Henderson were siblings.

April 22, 1820
George buys 50 acres in Smithfield Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. April 22, 1820 Isaac and Elizabeth Naylor sold Blacksmith George Elliott 50 acres in Jefferson County, Ohio for $400.00. This is a month after George and Prudence were married but she is not mentioned. The property is described as part of the east half of Section No. 35, in Township No. 8 and in Range 3. The description starts with a post in the east boundary line of the section being in the NE corner of the land of James Moore thence with said Moore south eighty degrees and three fourths west sixty two perches and five tenths to a post corner of the William Kirk thence with said Kirk north one degree and half west passing Kirk's NE Cor. & 136 perches to the center of the Cadiz Road thence south fifty degrees east thirty perches to the east boundary of the section thence with said bounmdary south one degree and a fourth east 114 perches to the beginning containing 51 acres more or less. The history on the land has is sold by the President by patent to Henry Northrup of Zanesville, Muskingum County Feb. 9, 1820. June 23, 1823 a
John Critchfield sells the land to Lorenzo Critchfield for $200.00.

1820 Census
The Jefferson County census of 1820 , Smithfield Township lists a George Elliott on page 214. There are only two people a male age 26 - 45 and a female age 26-45. He is described as being in Manuf. and this may go along witht he name Blacksmith George.

February 21, 1821
Their son Hugh W. Elliott is born.

December 14, 1825
Vol 1 Page 54 Holmes County, Ohio Land records has George purchasing 100 acres (lot 25-Rg 6- Tp8 - Sec 3) in the Military district. Dec. 14, 1825 for $230.00. The seller was Lorenzo D. Critchfield. Witnesses by A. Johston & Peter Casey. This property is in Mechanic Township and is on a ridge. In 1994 Mechanic Township road T85 passes through the center of the property. Township road 73 is several hundred feet north of the north side of the property. On page 7 of the Harry Logsdon book, "The Silent Streams" he mentions a spring on this farm that also was a source of soapstone.

April 19, 1826
Daughter Jane Elliott is born.

January 17, 1829
Son Robert B. Elliott is born.

1831
Daughter Elinor is born.

Mar. 21, 1831
Geo. & Prudence sell 51 acres in east 1/2 of sec. 35; Twp.8; Rg 3 of Jefferson County, Ohio to John Naylor. $500.00.
Apparently George was working as a blacksmith and to distinquish him from some other George Elliott he was called "Blacksmith George". A branding iron in the shape of an "E" reportedly made by George was, in 1971 over the mantel of the Stimel home in Millersburgh. Mrs. Stimel was a descendant of the Robert B. Elliott line.

184?
George and Prudence give about an acre of land on their farm to the Methodist Church and cemetery. This church is known as the Elliott Church.

March 19, 1846
Son Hugh married Elizabeth Van Buskirk in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She was born August 31, 1824 so she is 23+ and Hugh is 25. Alexander Swaney was the minister. The Van Buskirks lived near the Aaron Elliott family where the Carroll and Tuscarawas County lines meet. Members of both families are buried in a cemetery on the edge of what is now the man made Atwood Lake. I have not been able to connect Aaron Elliott to Blacksmith George but this marriage seems to support the fact that they were somehow related.

1847
One and possibly two grandchildren (Rebecca Jane and George L.) are born and die as the children of Hugh & Elizabeth. There are no gravestones present in 1994 in the Elliott cemetery for these children but an old written listing of names from tombstones in the library does indicate children were buried.

March 9, 1849
Granddaughter Nancy Ellen Elliott is born to Hugh & Elizabeth.
There is a class book for the Sunday School class at the Elliott church and it appears that George is a very faithful attendee with near perfect attendance. This is the first year his name, along with some twenty others, appears in the book.

1850
In the 1850 census of Mechanic Township, Holmes County, Ohio (page 164; Dwelling # 1116; Family #1137) there is George Elliott 56; and Prudence 58 both born in Ireland. The real estate is valued at $2,300 and George calls himself a farmer, not a blacksmith. The children living at home are Jane 22; Robert 21; Ellenor 19; Samuel 16.

August, 1852
A child of Hugh & Elizabeth has a grave in the Elliott cemetery.

December 26, 1852
Daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Van Buskirk Elliott dies. She is 28 years old. She is buried in the Ellliott Chuch cemetery.

June 26, 1853
Son Robert B. Elliott married Eliza Ruth Wade by M.M. Conant, minister.

July 18, 1853
Prudence dies at near age sixty. Her attendance recorded in the Elliott Sunday School Class book was not good for at least a year before her death. The weekly notes in the class book have many "S"s which I assume stand for sick. She is buried in he Elliott Cemetery. It appears that the George Elliott family had a row of graves in this cemetery. The first grave is for George, then Prudence, Elizabeth Van Buskirk Elliott and Hugh W. Elliott. These four graves are marked with slab type markers that cover the entire grave. I understand that this type of marker is typical in Scotland. The children of Hugh and Elizabeth were buried at the end of this row but not with these slab markers.

1854
Grandson George A. Elliott is born - son of Robert and Eliza.

June 5, 1856
Daughter Jane married Robert Guthrie. The minister is R. Biggs.

January 13, 1857
Sin Hugh makes his will and he is obviously aware that he is terminally ill.

June 5, 1857
Granddaughter Prudence Guthrie is born to Jane and Robert.

December 28, 1858
Son, Hugh died of consumption at the age of 37, and the granddaughter Nancy Ellen is orphaned. Note that Hugh does not name family members as guardians for Nancy Ellen. Hugh is buried in the Elliott Cemetery next to his wife and mother.
Hugh mentions that he expects his sister Jane to care for him in his illness and in 1859 she is living near Clay City in Clay County, Indiana so her family moves west sometime after this date.

1859
Grandson Hugh Franklin Elliott is born, the son of Robert B and Eliza Ruth. Another grandson, Hugh Guthrie, son of Jane and Robert is born January 12, 1859 in Clay County, Indiana, about 3 miles S.E. of Clay City.

August 29, 1859
Son Samuel marries Anna Crawford. She was born in 1835.

1860
In the census of this year George is not included in Holmes County. Census records are often in error and he may just have been missed??? Some of his family had moved west - Jane was near Terre Haute, Indiana.

September 6, 1862
Granddaughter Andromedia Guthrie is born in Clay County, Indiana.

October 24, 1862
Grandson Hugh Guthrie dies in Indiana. Age 3 1/2.

December 4, 1863
Daughter, Jane Elliott Guthrie dies in Clay County, Indiana. Like her big brother Hugh, she dies at age 37.

February 26, 1864
Granddaughter Andromedia Guthrie dies in Indiana. Age 1 1/2

March 21, 1865
George dies at age 70 and is buried in the Elliott Cemetery.

A. Heiser has a photo that was received from Harry Logsdon of Millersburg about 1970. Harry L. was a local historian and he claimed that the photo is of Blacksmith George Elliott. Could be.

The will of Blacksmith George first gives sons Robert and Samuel $200.00 each. Samuel get a saddle and bridle and Robert gets George's "Comment on the new testament". Nancy Ports (son Hugh's daughter)(note that Ports uses an "s")get a blue coverled and a breakfast table. He instructs Robert and Samuel to pay Susan McCaskey $25.00. Any additional money is to be paid to his grandchildren. Robert and Samuel are appointed executors. His will was witnessed by Ann Elliott and John H McCaskey.

In 1941 A.W. Elliott wrote a genealogy letter to Miss Blanche Elliott and AH has a copy in 1993. He claims that his grandfather George was born in Ireland in 1792, came to America in 1808 and died March 21 1865. He states that George was in the War of 1812 serving in the 32nd U S Regiment and was at one time a first sargent. He is to have served with General Harrison at the battle of the Thames.
_________________________________________________________
I found a typed listing of inhabitants of Holmes County school district #4 dated Feb. 1830. This list is of 25 families and included George and James Elliott and Jacob Conrad. District #4 is described as- - - - ;
"Beginning at the S.E. corner of Lot #9, thence south to the S.E. corner of the fraction on Sec. 3, thence west to the S.W. corner of Lot #34, thence North to the S.W. corner of Lot #27, thence East to the S.E. corner of Lot #11, thence South to the S.W. corner of Lot #9, thence East to the place of the beginning."
I cannot determine if this is 'our' Blacksmith George. His oldest child would be 9 in 1830
A school listing in 1843 district #4 has children ages 5-21 and includes Elnor, James ( I think it should be Jane) Robert and Samuel. The Jacob & Mary Conrad children are in the same district at this time.
___________________________________________________________
In trying to learn about George's parents I looked in t\ the book, "The Horn Papers, Vol. III." This has early land purchases in the Pennsylvania Counties of Fayette, Greene, and Washington. I looked for Elliotts, and founda Robert and Samuel D. Elliott on page 28. Wm. Elliott on page 11; Edward Elliott on page 2; Wm. Elliott on page 63. There is a John Elliott (page 61) with 335 1/4 acres in Donegal Township, Washinton County, this land is called Elliotts Chance and was obtained Oct. 23, 1786. August 22, 1798
Born in County Donegal, Ireland

1813
Probably the year he came to the USA. Settled in what is now Holmes County, Ohio.

With brothers Samuel and Thomas and sister Jane they were some of the first members of the Keene M.E. Church. The Elliott Chapel that was in Clark Township, Coshocton County was placed on land deeded by George.
Lived in Mill Creek Twp, Coshocton County, Oh. In the 1850 census his property was valued at $5,000.

A chapel was built on his land in Millcreek Township, Coshcoton County, Ohio.

There must have been some sort of epidemic for George lost two small sons five days apart and within a few weeks Samuel lost a daughter.

His wife, Mary Elliott is also his first cousin once removed. His wifes mother was his first cousin.

Hill's History of Coshocton County, Ohio, page 482 mentions a George Elliott teaching school just west of Bloomfield (Clark) in 1828. I believe it is this George.
